World War 1 - 24th January 1915 Action of the Dogger Bank. German cruiser Blücher sunk. German airship P.L.-19 brought down near Libau. Lieut.-General Sir A. J. Murray resigns as Chief of the General Staff, British Expeditionary Force, France. General Sir Archibald James Murray GCB, GCMG, CVO, DSO (23 April 1860 – 21 January 1945) was a British Army officer who served in the Second Boer War and World War I. He was Chief of Staff to the BEF in August 1914 but appears to have suffered a physical breakdown in the retreat from Mons, and was required to step down from that position in January 1915.He was replaced by Field Marshal Sir William Robert Robertson, 1st Baronet GCB, GCMG, GCVO, DSO (29 January 1860 – 12 February 1933) who was a British Army officer who served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) – the professional head of the British Army – from 1916 to 1918 during the First World War. Robertson was the first and only British Army soldier to rise from private soldier to field marshal. British Government offer Greek Government concessions in Asia Minor in return for help to Serbia.
