World War 1 ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month 1918. Because of this, the eleventh of November is known throughout Europe as remembrance day, and the Sunday closest to that date is Remembrance Sunday. I give this background information for my fellow American friends who may not be familiar with the tradition, as in America it is more usual to celebrate veterans day, which is on a different date. Today is Remembrance Sunday, and as a former servicemen it is particularly poignant to me, to remember those other servicemen and women who, whilst serving their countries gave their lives or their wellbeing. The act of serving ones country, of answering a call to duty is not new, yet our freedom and safety still rely on individuals who are willing to place their very lives at the disposal of their fellow citizens. The attached video carries images and a song from the Napoleonic wars, I have selected this because what the words of this song capture, I think, anyone who has ever served his country would understand and relate to. Please enjoy and spare a thought for the fallen.
