World War One is often mistakenly remembered just as a European War, forgetting the Turkish/Ottoman Empire front & repercussions still felt today: - The secret 1916 Sykes-Picot agreement between Britain and France to carve up the Middle East up drew artificial national boundaries, entrenched minorities - in power as local agents for the great powers and rendered the Kurdish people stateless. - While the 1917 Balfour Declaration drawn up by Foreign Secretary, AJ Balfour promised support of Britain and its allies to Zionist settler-colonists to build a Jewish homeland in Palestine laying the basis for the creation of the state of Israel thirty years later. - The war ended with the British occupying the territory that was to become Iraq, Palestine,Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. With the Ottoman Empire destroyed, Britain became the dominant power in the Middle East. Havent had a chance to watch this yet, but this new series on Al-Jazeera English looks good. Lemme know...
