World is facing the biggest challenge from emissions by vehicles. Vehicle on road are increasing by day as develpoing countries like India and China register quick economic development. Air pollution has jumped to 5th spot among top killers in India. Global Burden of Disease claimed that outdoor air pollution caused 627,000 deaths and 17.7mn healthy years of life lost in 2010 in India. Worldwide i...t caused 3.2mn premature deaths and over 74mn healthy years of life in 2010. Vehicular pollution is major health hazards in urban areas leading to common diseases like cardiovascular diseases, strokes and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Low carbon technology for transportation is very much needed to prevent the damage it is causing to the health of large section of population in India which is observing rapid urbanization in recent years. Small cities, towns and villages have emerged as a fast growing market for purchase of passengers vehicles. Situation is worsening by day with poor infrastructure, traffic congestion and lack of public transport system. Emerging technologies with a potential to help curb this problem in short term are few. 1) Electric Vehicles and 2) Hydrogen Hybrid Vehicles. Use of electric vehicles is limited due to battery performance. Emerging Fuecell technology can help solve this problem, but it is very expensive as yet. Hydrogen Hybrid is gaining populairty as it only uses water as input to deliver ipto 40% gains in fuel efficiency and upto 50% reduction in emissions. There is no recurring cost. The technollogy needs support from the government and Auto manufacturers to customize it for mass deployment in new as well as old vehicles. Retrofitting on on-road vehicles can make a big difference. If so happens, your vehicle will run greener and take you longer distance for the same amount of fuel and you will be able to breath cleaner air too.
