World remembers horrors of Auschwitz 70 years on Leaders from around the world have gathered in Poland to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of #Auschwitz on Tuesday. They are accompanied by aging survivors of the concentration camp who have all come together to remember the six million Jewish victims of the genocide. #Auschwitz was one of the largest and most notorious concentration camps maintained by the #Nazis during World War II. An estimated 1.5 million people were brutally massacred in poisonous gas chambers there. Marking the occasion in a separate ceremony in Berlin, German Chancellor #AngelaMerkel reminded people that the Auschwitz concentration camp was a “warning of what people can do to one another,” while adding that “crimes against humanity can never be forgotten.” Tuesday’s ceremonies are part of a series of events that are scheduled to be held in different countries across the world to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In China, too, a series of commemorative activities will be held. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said that these will demonstrate the country’s commitment to maintaining world peace and the post-war international order. “The memorial activities organized by China and relevant countries are to inspire a desire to maintain peace, as well as to keep memories of history from everyone around the world,” said Hua Chunying. She also added that China urges people from all countries to fully leverage the opportunity to review history and take lessons from it. “(People from all countries should) work together for a better future and build a world with long-standing peace and prosperity,” said Hua.
