World’s First Smart Ceiling Fan The folks at Big Ass Fans have come out with what they are calling the “world’s first smart ceiling fan”… the Haiku Ceiling Fan. As more and more of our home gadgets and appliances become “smart” it becomes apparent that plenty of other opportunities are available for the networked makeover. Apple is onboard with their latest Home Kit and you already have access to smart thermostats, light bulbs, door locks, etc… Carey Smith, founder of Big Ass Fans is betting that customers will want a smart ceiling fan. I happen to agree with him. The Haiku Smart Ceiling Fan’s will have the SenseME technology and an array of sensors. The fan will work to make the home comfortable before the user goes hunting for a fan switch or thermostat. How does the Haiku fan do this? Well the SenseME knows when you enter or leave the room. It knows what the temperature and humidity in the room. It takes this combination of data and your personal comfort preferences to tailor the fan’s on/off and speed settings. Haiku with SenseME, which begins shipping later this summer, is the first fan controllable by a smartphone app. Use the app to set schedules for both the fan and light or select from several unique control modes. Among them is Gradual Awake that gently increases the fan’s speed and light for a more pleasant wakeup, which research has proven reduces that can’t-get-out-of-bed feeling. Farewell, clock radio. Unlike typical ceiling fan lights, Haiku’s patent-pending LED seamlessly integrates into the fan. The LED’s digital dimmer includes 16 unique brightness settings. Haiku is handcrafted of the highest-quality materials, such as sustainable Moso bamboo or durable, glass-infused matrix composite. Each Haiku is also hand-balanced in a 13-step process, ensuring no fan will ever rattle or wobble. All of that is fine and dandy… but the awesome part is that the fans are made in the USA (Lexington, Kentucky) and will add an additional 40 jobs to the Big Ass Fans team.
