Worry / Fear: the great enemy of joy What is the great enemy of joy? In the New Testament, it seems to be not so much sorrow or grief as anxiety. It is telling, I think, that immediately after commanding the Philippians to rejoice always, Paul goes on to say: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (4:6–7). It almost seems as if Paul was an eyewitness to the Sermon on the Mount and heard Jesus say to His disciples: “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on.
