Worth a repeat--lets now make it Wendys New Years 2015 message (more later at The Wrench): In light of the NY Fracking Ban, we must all stop calling for a moratorium. That time and its language are OVER. We MUST call for an Outright Ban. Five compelling reasons: 1. What purpose could there possibly be for a moratorium GIVEN that NY banned HVHF because UNDER THEIR MORATORIUM they concluded that HVHF was unsafe? What could a moratorium accomplish now? What more health study do we need? In other words, what on earth sense could it possibly make to ask for a moratorium to study what we already know from the NY...study? 2. Governor Tom (The Gas) Wolf is very likely right now jumping for joy at the prospect that the cash value of Marcellus Shale Gas has gone up in virtue of its relative scarcity since the NY Marcellus is out of the shale play. This will create pressure to frackity frack--less regulation, less oversight. With the NY ban, its GAME ON in PA. We dont have time to dicker around with moratorium language that people WILL see is SILLY given the obviousness of (1). 3. Given (1) and (2), if we dont get clear on message NOW, we are never going to be clear. The NY Ban changes everything. Calling for a moratorium NOW is a weak message at best in light of Wolfs current salivation over how much good will hes going to build among even Republicans for cashing in on this windfall. 4. That Wolf takes us not one bit seriously is clearly evidenced by (a) his GAME ON response to the NY Ban, (b) his so far lack of response to Melissa Troutman at the well-respected Public Herald, and maker of Triple Divide. (c) our lack of clear messaging--repeated over and over by astroturf greenies like Pennsylvania Voters Against Fracking, Clean Water Action, Berks Gas Truth, Food and Water Watch, Pennsylvania who are more interested in keeping their donors than they are in ending a disaster-- 5. MOST SIGNIFICANT: IF THE NEW YORKERS ARE WORTH AN OUTRIGHT BAN, WHY ARE WE SELLING OURSELVES SHORT CALLING FOR A MORATORIUM THATS REDUNDANT? ARENT WE WORTH AS MUCH AS THEY ARE? DONT OUR HUMAN RIGHTS COUNT FOR AS MUCH AS THEIRS? I say they do. I say its time to stop this playing at activism (see (c)).
