Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2013/14 Season. Up For The Cup As Season Starts With A Bang. It’s BACK. The Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League for the 2013/14 Season kicked off with the Preliminary Round of the Lee’s Computer Systems Challenge Cup and while there were no major upsets or shocks there was the odd close call or two with a couple of sides breathing a big sigh of relief as they made it into the First Round proper. There were the usual high scores, high finishes and high drama as the players fresh from their Summer breaks or Summer League got into the action laying down the marker for the long, hard season ahead. Lee’s Computer Systems Challenge Cup. Preliminary Round. Rose & Crown 0 v Martyrs Club 4. While the boys from the Rose rested all Summer long the visitors from the Martyrs had been in Summer League action and their sharpness showed as they progressed into the First Round Proper with a 4-0 victory. Peter Worrell 100,140 was first into action for the visitors and scored a fine 2-1 win over Paul Lewis and the home side fell further behind when Dai McCloughlin suffered the same fate at the hands of Dai Howe. In form Roy Phillips 2x100,135 beat Steve Evans to make it 3-0 and the Rose finally wilted in the fourth leg when Colin Howe 4x100 beat Kristian Dowd to steer the Martyrs safely into the First Round Proper. Angel Hotel 0 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “A” 4. Teg Powell 100,125,140 started the ball rolling for the Guest Bowls “A” with a comfortable 2-0 win over E. Hill and C. Pugh found a ton for the Angel in game three but Mike Martin replied with the same for the visitors to take the game 2-0 and put his team just one point away from the First Round Proper. This was achieved in the very next game with debut boy Lee Nicholas beating M. Jones 2-0 to advance his side into the next round. Brunswick Hotel 0 v Merthyr Ex Club 4. Returning to the League after a couple of seasons away the Brunswick Hotel had a difficult welcome back when they had a home tie against the vastly experienced Merthyr Ex Club. Grawen Arms 4 v Colliers Cwtch “B”. The Grawen had a pretty lean spell last time out by their normally sky high expectations and will be determined to put things right this time out and started well with a comfortable 4-0 win over the visiting Colliers Cwtch “B”. Anthony Carstairs 100 took the first game against the throw beating A. Fealey 2-0 as the Grawen got their new season underway and 2-0 then soon followed with Dean Smith 6x100, 128 beating B. Mount Pleasant Inn 4 v Farmers Arms “A”0. Gary Champion took the darts off Alan Foley to make it 2-1 in the home sides favour and old timer Ron Davies made it 3-1 in beating D. Thomas. D. Day was charged with keeping the Llwyn in the contest but he found Tony Galliers too big an obstacle as the Ex Club player put his side into the next round. Merthyr Rugby Club “B” 4 v Merthyr Football Club “B” 2. This was a close call for the home side in a well contested game with the visitors giving a very good account of themselves. Veteran of many a long campaign Ron Phillips 100 took the darts off C. Evans 2x100 to put the home side into an early lead and inform Chris Stansfield 2x100,120,125 got the better of S. Harris to secure a place in the First Round Proper for a relieved home side. Anchor Inn 2 v Baili-Glas Inn “A”2. The Baili “A” were another to suffer from a bout of the colly wobbles when they travelled to the Anchor Inn where they were made to struggle and suffer before finally booking their place in the First Round Proper. With each singles game being the best of three legs the visitors started well enough with Nigel Meek going 1-0 up against the Anchor’s Chris Vick. The visitors anticipated an early point but Chris fought back to level and in a nervy last leg the Baili player held on to throw to edge the leg and the lead. Alan Mee was up next for the away side and he needed to call on all his vast reserves of experience and stamina to eventually scrape past young Matthew Charleston 2-1. An off form Drew Bradley could not find his range and went down 2-0 to a fine showing form Ian Daley as the home side got back into the game. A solid performance from Cled Jones scored him a fine 2-0 victory over Matthew Darcy leaving the visitors one point away from the next round. Tim Charleston coasted to a 1-0 lead over Doug Wills in the first leg of the fifth game but then failed at countless chances at a double in the remaining two legs allowing Doug to pinch the game 2-1 and get the Anchor a lifeline. The sixth game however proved to be the last as slow hand Terry Morgan beat Kyle Morgan, and the clock, by a 2-0 score to get the Baili through. Guest Keen Bowls Club “B” 4 v Dowlais Con Club 2. A slightly understrength Con Club side travelled to the Guest Bowls “B” but still managed to give a good account of themselves and if they had been at full strength then it may well have been a different story. A bye in the first leg gave the hosts the early advantage and this they increased in game two with A. Coombs 100,140 edging past Gary Thomas 2x100 by a 2-1 margin. Lee Morgan showed some grit and determination to beat R. Flye to level at 2-2. Wins then from S. Wilkes and J. Barrett over Steve Davies and George Quirke respectively then secured a 4-2 win for the home side and a place in the First Round Proper. Colliers Arms 2 v Merthyr Rugby Club “A”4. This was a hard fought game and gave excitement from start to finish as both teams battled to try and book a place in the next round. Vastly experienced Phil John 4x100 held throw in the first game to beat D. Thomas 2x140 and give the visitors an early lead and this then doubled with the promising new recruit Kerry Green 4x100 beating M. Firth 100,140 in an exciting game. Lyn Jones 3x100 beat veteran tungsten slinger Keith Lewis 2x100 to make it 3-0 and leave the visitors standing just one point away from victory but they were made to fight for the vital spoils. Leighton James 2x100,140 beat old warrior Walter Williams to pull one leg back and when Jimmy Rees 2x100,140 then beat Roy Element 3x100, 140 to pull a second back and start within a point the visitors looked a little frail. Seasoned Les Thomas 3x100,140 then calmed all the nerves for the Rugby “A” with victory over D. Lewis 100 to see his side into the next stage.
