Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2014 Season Cup Fever Grips League As Teams Eye Silverware The action this week saw teams engaged in Cup battles in the Second Round of the Worthington’s Cup and the First Round of the C.&M. Window Films Cup with teams fighting for places in the next round of their respective cups and as the rounds slip by the action gets hotter and the atmosphere more tense. Worthington’s Cup 2nd Round. Merthyr Labour Club 5 v Martyrs Club 1. Division One giants the Merthyr Labour Club entertained the Martyrs Club who play a division below and held too much firepower for the visitors booking a place in the quarter finals with a comfortable 5-1 victory. The home side took opening fours leg against the darts with Wayne Davies 140 & Ron Morgan 136 on target with John Sales 140 leading the charge for the away side. The first pairs saw Wayne Davies & Ron Morgan 100 apiece increase the lead to 2-0 with a hold of throw over fighting Peter Worrell 125 & Roy Phillips but the lead was halved in the final pairs with Colin Howe & Matthew Phillips 100,111 out getting the better of Gareth Dunn 100 & Jason Baynham. The first of the singles matches saw R. Phillips 2x100,135 in excellent scoring form for the away side but his woeful finishing cost him dear as Ron Morgan 100 stole the leg to put the hosts 3-1 ahead. Jason Baynham took game five against the darts with a hard fought victory over former Summer League Singles Champion John Sales 100 for a 4-1 lead and the victory was made complete in game six with Wayne Davies 3x100 getting the better of Colin Howe 100 to see the mighty Labour Club book their place in the next round. Grawen Arms 5 v Mount Pleasant Inn 1. This all division one fixture saw the hosts from the Grawen successfully make it through to the next round with a comfortable win over the visiting Mt Pleasant. Jordan King100, Phil Locke 140 & Scott Bayliss 84 out helped the hosts to the opening fours leg taking the leg against the darts with D. Morley 100 attempting a fightback for the Mt. Dean Smith 100 & Wayne Gutty 125 held throw in the first pairs over D. Morley & Colin Yendle and a break of throw in the final pairs saw Phil Locke 100 & nephew Darren advance the score to 3-0 ahead of the match deciding singles legs. Wayne Gutty 100, 121,127 in a 18 dart leg over Dai Phelps 100 saw the home side go 4-0 ahead before Derek Dobbins 100 beat Dean Smith with throw to pull a leg back for the visitors. Darren Locke 99,140 made it 5-1 and a place in the quarter final in the next game with a fine win over Dai Morley 100. Baili-Glas Inn “A” 5 v Farmers Arms “B” 3. Division two’s Baili-Glas Inn “A” entertained the Farmers Arms “B” from division four and were given notice that they were in for a battle from the very start with the visitors claiming the fours leg with ease with Dean Moulds hitting a 120 though the Baili replied with a 140 from Drew Bradley and a 119 from “Dangerous” Andrew Morgan but the bigger “cover shots” came from the away side. The first pairs leg saw the home side draw level with captain Cled Jones & amazing Alan Mee 125,140 beating Stewart Charleston 100 & Dean Moulds and then they took the lead with Terry Morgan 2x100 & Nigel “Sun Tan” Meek seeing off the challenge of Neil Roberts & Mike Lewis ahead of the singles legs. The first singles saw Wayne Smalldon 100,101 up first for the Baili but he could not take advantage of throw as Stewart Charleston 100 took a leg against his former teammates to level at 2-2. Alan Mee 140 continued his good form with a fine win against the darts over Neil Roberts to edge the Baili 3-2 ahead but the scores were soon level with Dean Moulds 2x100 surging past the under par Tim Charleston. This though only seemed to spur the home side into action with Nigel Meek 2x100 beating Mike Lewis against the throw and then Cled Jones completed the win holding throw to beat Chris George and book his side a place in the quarter finals. Aberfan Social Club “A” 5 v Imperial Hotel 4. This was a tense game from start to finish going right to the wire in a match that could have gone either way. The Imp took the early advantage with a hold of throw in the fours leg courtesy of a “ton” apiece from Jason Launchbury, John Donovan & Anthony Prosser and with Jason Launchbury 100 & Terry Dowman beating Warren Rees & Josh O’Keeffe against the darts things looked bright for the away side. The second and final pairs saw the home side finally get on the scoreboard with Lloyd Davies 100 & Kevin Downing 105,132 overcoming the stiff challenge Anthony Prosser 2x100 & Chris Llewellyn to halve the deficit ahead of the singles. Jason Launchbury 100 broke throw in the first singles beating Kevin Downing to regain the two leg cushion for the Imp but this was cut back to one with Charles Davies 116,140 turning the tables on Chris Llewellyn and then Aberfan drew level again with Lloyd Davies holding his darts to beat Rob Stevens in a hard fought game. The seventh leg was another hard fought game with Warren Rees 1oo edging past Marsden Evans to put the home side 4-3 ahead but the lead was short lived with Anthony Prosser 2x100 beating Peter Emmanuel to level at 4-4setting up a deciding last leg. The final game of the night was a tense affair which saw veteran Ken Davies 100 edge past Anthony Prosser to earn the home side a hard fought win and a place in the quarter finals. C.&M. Window Films Supplementary Cup. 1st Round. Dynevor Arms 5 v Colliers Cwtch “B” 0. These division five companions faced each other for a place in the last sixteen and it turned out to be quite a comfortable night for the Dyn as they recorded a comfortable 5-0 victory over their visitors. The fours leg went the way of the home side and they quickly doubled their lead with the pairing of Phil Lewis & R. Lee getting the better of Gareth Williams & Ken Gledhill. M. Edwards & Kerry Lloyd then took the last pairs leg against the darts with victory over Christian Jones & Daniel Minnett for a 3-0 lead going into the singles legs. R. Lee took the first singles with throw over Christian Jones to nudge the Dyn nearer the next round and this was achieved in the next game with Kerry Lloyd getting the better of James Williams. Merthyr Vale Ex Club (Daggers) 0 v Baili-Glas Inn “B” 5. No your eyes do not deceive you it is the mighty Baili-Glas Inn “B” in the Supplementary Cup following their failure to hit the doubles to finish in their last game in the Worthy Cup against the Grawen they now find themselves having to hit the double to start in the C.&M. Window Films Cup. The away side though made light of the double start format this time around with a commanding win over the Daggers with the Baili getting stuck into the fours leg with a strong lineup to go one nil ahead. Marvellous Matthew Quinlan & Typhoon Geraint Thomas beat J. Tarr & Steve Probert to put the visitors 2-0 ahead and then Andrew Rough & Steve Haman made it 3-0 with victory over Steve Llewellyn & Harry Morgan just ahead of the singles . J. Tarr 100,140 was in good form for the home side in the first singles but it was not enough as Andrew Rough 105, 125 took the leg against the darts for a 4-0 lead and victory was made complete in the next leg with Steve “Van Haman beating G. Robertson for a place in the last sixteen. Merthyr Rugby Club “B” 5 v Rose & Crown 1. The home side took control of this match from the very start with victory in the fours leg against the throw with Mervyn Hughes 140 & Colin Lloyd 100 in good scoring form for the hosts and Kristian Dowd 2x100 finding the target for the visitors and then they added the first pairs to their tally with Mervyn Hughes 92 & Chris Stansfield 100,125 getting the better of Alan Evans & P. Lewis 140. Chris Price 180 & Jonathon Davies 100 took the second pairs against the darts with a good win over Kristian Dowd 120,140 & Kevin Morgan 100 in a tense leg to give the home side a commanding 3-1 lead going into the singles matches. Ian Evans held his throw in the first of the singles legs to beat S. Hughes 134 before veteran Phil Hughes beat old timer Ron Phillips to earn the Rose a faint hope of getting back into the game. The Rose though finally wilted in the sixth leg with Chris Price 118,125 beating gallant Ian Evans to earn the Rugby “B” a place in the last sixteen. Colliers Cwtch “A” 2 v Cyfarthfa Arms 5. A hard fought game saw the Cyfarthfa take the fours leg with H. Jones 100 finding the target for the visitors and P. Beck 100 replying for the hosts. J. Watts & H. Baker 100 levelled the match with a hold of throw in the first pairs beating H. Jones & J. Russell but the visitors regained the lead ahead of the singles taking the second pairs with D. Morley & J. Tranter edging past A. Beck 100,140 & G. Jones. J. Tranter moved the score line along to 3-1 in favour of the visitors with a win over B. Lewis but the Cwtch “A” remained in the game with A. Beck 120 beating Dominic Illari to pull the home side to within a point at 2-3 down. J. Russell 100 beat G. Jones 125 in a tough battle making it 4-2 to the visitors before D. Morley booked his side a place in the last sixteen with victory over P. Beck 100. Heolgerrig Social Club 5 v Farmers Arms “A” 2. This battle was closer than the final score line suggests with division four outfit giving their first division hosts a good run for their money. The home side took the fours leg against the darts with Meirion Evans 100 & Trad Davies 133 finding the target and two nil quickly followed with Iory Haines & Bob Watkins beating Dai Jones & John Thomas before Wayne Morgan & G. Price pulled a point back for the Farmers with victory over Mike Evans & Alan Moore in the second pairs, Mike Evans 100 beat Rhion Evans in the first of the singles matches to increase the lead to 3-1 and 4-1 then followed with Ray Williams 100 beating Wayne Morgan to leave the hosts standing one point away from the last sixteen. Farmers hero Dai Jones kept his side in the game with a fine win over Colin Morgan 140 but the relief was temporary as Meirion Evans 100,140 got past G. Price to steer the home side through to the next stage. Lord Raglan “B” 5 v Penydarren Social Club “B” 3. A strong Lord four’s took the fours leg against the throw for an early lead and this they then doubled with dinosaur hunters Viv Morgan & Brian Roberts edging past Dai Richards & Ceri Stent in a tense game which they took with throw. Lyndon Price & Steve Smith got the visitors into the game with a splendid win over Dean Barnett & Brian Meek in the second and final pairs to trail by just one point going into the singles. Steve Smith levelled the game with a splendid win over Keirion Meek against the darts in the first singles and then in a battle of the old brigade Lyndon Price beat Brian Roberts to put the Pen into the lead for the first time at 3-2. Gavin Nichols squared matters beating Ceri Stent and then in another nail biting battle Brian Meek beat Dai Richards against the darts to edge the hosts 4-3 ahead. Old campaigner Viv Morgan then beat another veteran Clive Morgan in another close game to nudge the home side into the last sixteen. Mountain Ash Inn 5 v Morlais Tavern “B” 3. The Tavern took the opening leg with throw but the lead was short lived with Nigel Nicholas & G. Marshall holding throw to score a fine win over Mike Davies & Gary Flye before G. Nicholas &Aaron Baigrie regained the lead for the hosts with victory in the second pairs over Brian Bartlett & Andrew Jones to lead 2-1 going into the singles. Nigel Nicholas added the first singles to the home sides total in beating M. Davies and with P. Martin then beating Gary Flye in the second singles match up the home side stood just one win away from the next round. Jamie Davies 125 kept the visitors in the game with victory over Lee Kelly and with Julian Crowle then beating G. Marshall the Morlais stood just one point behind. Aaron Baigrie then remained calm and sent the home side wild with delight earning a great win over Andrew Williams and a place in the last sixteen. Winchester Bar 5 v Great Western Hotel 3. A hard fought contest began with the Western taking the fours leg but the Winchesters response was quick and effective with T. Williams 100,139 & Anthony Lennon beating Mike O’Neill & Richard James and then K. Pike & D. Davies beat Ceri Arthur 121,130 & Tyrone Broad against the darts in a thrilling game to give the hosts a 2-1 lead going into the singles legs. Johnny Andrews held throw in the first singles leg to put his side 3-1ahead with victory over Mike O’Neill 100 but then the away side hit back with wins for Neil Jones and Richard James 106 out over D. Davies and Alan Owen respectively to level the match at 3-3. T. Williams 140 beat Mark Osbourne to put the home side in reach of the last sixteen needing one point and this duly arrived in the next game with Anthony Lennon holding throw to beat Ceri Arthur and get into the next round. Penydarren Club “A”5 v Angel Hotel 4. This game went right to the wire and was a thrilling encounter from start to finish with both sides giving their all. The Pen were first to make a mark taking the fours leg against the darts and with Mike Bond & R. Beynon holding throw in the first pairs they took a 2-0 lead. The Angel made their first mark in the second pairs with M. Jones & B. Morgan beating Phil Bond & Wayne Lee to trail by just one going into the singles. C. John inflicted a defeat upon Mike Bond in the first singles drawing the sides level but parity was short lived as Phil Bond regained the upper hand for the Pen with victory over G. Hancock in a hard fought battle. M. Jones squared the match with victory over the home sides R. Beynon and then M. Davies beat C. Richards to put the Angel just one win away from the next round. Wayne Lee kept the tie alive with a win over Glen Callan at 4-4 and in a thrilling las t leg John Murphy broke the throw of B. Morgan to earn the hosts a last gasp victory. Guest Keen Bowls Club “B” 4 v Merthyr Football Club “A” 5. This was a nail biter from start to finish and could have gone either way. The Guest took the opening fours leg against the throw for an early lead and 2-0 soon followed with A. Coombs 100 & S. Wilkes beating Jamie Phillips & L. Davies . The home side then increased the pressure with Wayne Robinson 100,115 & T. Pollard seeing off the challenge of G. Moore & M. Davies for a 3-0 lead going into the singles. M. Davies 100 got the better of Wayne Robinson in the first singles to gain the Football Club their first point of the game and a second soon followed with M. Davies beating W. Harris with throw to get within a point. Jamie Phillips then levelled the contest with victory over T. Pollard as the game really opened up. A, Coombs nudged the hosts ahead again with a fine win over L. Davies 100 to go within a point of the last sixteen. Rhys Donovan beat S. Davies 115 against the darts to level the match and then in a dramatic last leg decider G. Moore 140 beat S. Wilkes with throw to see the visitors through to the next round. Colliers Arms 5 v Lord Raglan “A” 4 Another game to go all the way saw the Colliers hang on for a narrow 5-4 win over the visiting Lord “A” in an absolute thriller that had everything. The Colliers took the opening game against the darts but then their visitors replied in kind with Bryn Lewis & Alan Driscoll beating Keith Lewis & son Damion to level at one apiece. Ivor Price 120 away & L. Thomas then produced the first hold of throw with a great win over Martin Treen 100 & Martin Firth to give the Lord a 2-1 lead going into the singles. Alan Driscoll scored a tremendous win over Martin Treen in the first of the singles to put the away side 3-1 ahead but back came the home side through John Jones who beat L. Thomas to reduce the arrears to just one point as the action reached fever pitch. Living legend Terry Barnett then put the Lord one win away from the next round in beating Martin Firth but then the darting doubles disaster hit the away side. Keith Lewis pulled a point back for the hosts with a win over Ivor Price and then as the tension rose even higher Dean Thomas held throw to beat Kevin Snowden and level the match with a ninth leg shout out. The Colliers had young Damion Lewis in their corner while the Lord had the vastly experienced Bryn Lewis to see them home. In a night of darting drama Bryn got not find a starting double and suffered the dreaded “tin-hat” as a jubilant Damion saws his side into the last sixteen. All players are reminded that this Friday 10th January sees the first batch of the pairs competition take place at the Penydarren Social Club. Roll-call is at 7-15pm for a 7-30 pm start. Any players not present at roll-call will be eliminated from the competition. All players are asked to help and mark the first games on then it will be the responsibility of the losing pairs to
