Worthington’s Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League 2014/15 Season. Daggers Put The Knife Into The Baili While Labour Club Not Too Keen At The Bowls Club Life in the 2014/15 Sponsored Merthyr & District Darts League proved tough for many teams this week including the two early pace setters in the First Division who both fell short on their away trips. Elsewhere there were exciting games in all divisions with high scores and high drama abounding as nerves were shredded and tungsten melted in the white hot atmosphere of the red hot action. Division One. Merthyr Vale Ex Club “B” 3 (Daggers B) v Baili-Glas Inn “B” 6. This was an excellent game with the Daggers putting up a very stubborn display to stem the visitors excellent start to the season and tighten up the league. Jeff Pearce 100 & Steve Haman 2x100 took the first pairs for the visitors with throw beating off the challenge of Karl Manns & Colin Yendle 120 and 2-0 followed with Andrew Rough 100 & Mervyn Matthews edging past John Terrett 100 & I, Welch. The third pairs went against the darts as Derek Dobbins 99 & Phil Morris 97, 100 dug deep to beat Geraint Thomas 137 & Kevin Roberts to get the Daggers their first point. The first singles saw the Mighty Quinn, Matthew Quinlan 2x100,140 , in action for the Baili and he held his nerve to break the throw of Derek Dobbins 100 and put the visitors 3-1 ahead and next in line Jeff Pearce 2x100,139 kept up the momentum with a fine win over Karl Manns 3x100. Andrew Rough 2x100,92 out made it 5-1 with a break of throw over I. Welch but then something of a shock with Phil Morris 4x100, 89 out beating Stone Wall Steve Haman 6x100,140 by a 2-1 margin to gain the hosts a second point. Typhoon Geraint Thomas 4x100 then blew in to steer John Terrett 4x100 of course on his own throw and put the Baili 6-2 ahead but in the final game Colin Yendle 3x100,140,180 broke the darts of Kevin Roberts 4x100,105, to gain the home side a very valuable third point and put a slight dent in their opponents early season title aspirations. Baili-Glas Inn “A”4 v Heolgerrig Social Club 5. Well canons are not working for the Baili A to the next step is a nuclear bomb as they try to beat the double voodoo. Mike Evans & Bob Watkins took the first pairs for the away side with throw over Jason Launchbury 100 & Alan Mee with the home side missing doubles but the second pairs saw the home side draw level as Captain Nigel Meek & Vice-Captain Terry Morgan 100 apiece saw off the challenge of Meirion Evans & Steve Davies. A third hold of throw saw Heolgerrig regain the lead with Iory Haines & Colin Morgan 100,125 getting the better of Matthew Hughes & Kerry Ryan as the sides headed into the singles legs. Jason Launchbury 3x100 kept up his unbeaten start to the season holding throw to beat Trad Davies 2x100 and level at 2-2 but the visitors were quick to regain the upper hand with young Mike Evans 100,140 edging past veteran Alan Mee 2x100 by a 2-1 margin in a very tight game. Jamie Phillips 100,134,140 was in fine form to hold throw and see off Colin Morgan 2x100,135,140 by a 2-0 score and level at 3-3 and then a gutsy performance from Andrew Morgan 100, 140 saw him utter the now famous “I won my game” as he beat Iory Haines 100,125 by a 2-0 margin against the darts and actually put the home side ahead at 4-3 and just one point away from their first league win of the season. The lead though was short lived as Bob Watkins bit back for the visitors breaking the throw of Cled Jones 2x100, 140 by a 2-1 margin to level at 4-4 setting up a thrilling finale. The final game saw Meirion Evans 2x100 hold throw to beat Matthew Hughes 100 by a 2-1 margin as yet another home player saw doubles go abegging. Penydarren Social Club “B” 5 v Richards Arms 4. With both sides in the hunt for points this was a thrilling game from start to finish and highly entertaining for the watching spectators. John Wood & Tony Hedges 100 put the visitors ahead with victory over Clive Morgan & K. Howe and 2-0 quickly followed with Peter O’Sullivan 125 & Roy Element 100 breaking the darts of Dai Richards 100 & R. L. Smith 120. Legendary Lyndon Price 2x140 & young Steve Smith then got the Pen into the game chalking up their first point with an against the throw win over another legend Adrian Thomas & Lyn Jones 2x100 to half the deficit going into the singles. One half of the Grecian Boys, John Wood 3x100,119,2x140 was in fantastic form as he beat Lyndon Price 133,140 in the first singles putting the Richards 3-1 ahead but Steve Smith 2x100 got the home side back into the game with a 2-1 win over Adrian Thomas 2x100 in a hard fought affair. N. Morgan 2x100,2x125,140 held throw to beat Tony Hedges 100 and level the game at three apiece but experienced Roy Element 125 then had the away side ahead again with a 2-1 win over Dai Richards 2x100,140 .Old stager Ray Smith 135 then beat the other half of the Grecian Boys Phil John 100,140 by a 2-0 score to square the match and set up a decider and in a hard fought last match Clive Morgan 2x100,140 held on to beat Lyn Jones 100,140 by a 2-0 score line. Grawen Arms 4 v Horse & Groom 5. This was another game that went right to the wire and could have gone either way with both sides giving their all in a cracking match. Wayne Titcomb & Steve Nicholas 100,140 were quick out of the stalls for the Horse with a fine win over Peter Locke 140 & son Darren but the Grawen were quickly on level terms with Phil Locke (3 yes a score of 3) & Kevin Lane holding onto throw to beat Mark Virgin 100 & Owain Davies. The last pairs leg also went with throw with Phil Williams 100 & Brian Nicholas edging past Grawen Giants Marcus Davies & Kerry Green 100 apiece to put the Horse into a narrow lead ahead of the singles. Peter Locke 2x100,140 levelled the match with a 2-0 win over Phil Williams 100, 2x140 but back came the visitors with Brian Nicholas 2x100, 180 scoring an excellent 2-0 win over Dean Smith 138, 180 to lead 3-2. Phil Locke 4x100,2x140 found his scoring touch to beat Steve Nicholas 3x100,125,140 but the sides were not level for long as Steve Thomas 4x100,2x140 edged past Darren Locke 4x100,140 in a cracking game to lead 4-3. Grawen new recruit Kevin Lane 3x100,2x140, 128 out levelled the match with a 2-1 win over Wayne Titcomb 2x100,2x140,180, who had a 13 dart leg in the second leg, in a cracking encounter and in the deciding match missed doubles proved very costly for the home side as Marcus Davies 4x100 was beaten 2-0 by Owain Davies 135 as the Horse took the match by a short head. Division Two. Merthyr Football Club 3 v Morlais Tavern 6. Simon Marks 2x100 & Mark Evans took the first pairs for the hosts breaking the throw of G. Scott & I. Laing but the Morlais returned the favour in the next leg with G. Thomas 125 & S. Davies 121,125 getting the better of D. James 100 & J. Scanlon to level. The third game saw the first hold of throw with G. Giles 140 & R. Roberts holding on to beat Matthew Davies 140 & T. Laing and gain a vital 2-1 lead going into the singles matches. Simon Marks 100,140 levelled the match with a win over G. Coombs 135 in the first singles but back came the Tavern with a fine showing from R. Roberts 5x100 earing him a 2-0 win over Mark Evans to lead 3-2. Jimmy Winstone 2x100,140 scored a narrow 2-1 win over S. Rees 120,125,140 to increase the lead to 4-2 and 5-2 quickly arrived with G. Thomas 140 beating Matthew Davies 2x100,101,140 by a 2-0 score. Ian Laing 2x100 pulled a point back for the hosts in beating G. Scott 2x100 but the away side had the final say with S. Davies 100,121,123,125,140 beating G. Moore 100 to earn the Tavern a fine 6-3 win. White Horse Inn 5 v Merthyr Ex Club 4. The Horse maintained their fine league start with a narrow hard fought victory over the visiting Ex Club. Roy Evans 100 & Mark Evans 125 got the Horse off to a fine start with a break of throw over Jason Baynham 100,121 & Wayne O’Neill and with Mark Seggerson 100,121, & Gareth Price making it 2-0 with a hold of throw over Denzil Griffiths & Paul Esterbanez the home side were off to a flier. Wayne Jones & Andrew Davies arrested the Horse’s run when they took the last pairs beating Matthew Charleston & I. Thomas 100 to cut the home sides lead to just one point. Mark Evans 2x100 made it 3-1 to the home side with victory over Steve Mahoney 100 and 4-1 followed with Gareth Price 3x100 beating Wayne Jones by a 2-0 score. Roy Evans 3x100 kept up the pace for the Horse with a fine win over Denzil Griffiths for an unassailable lead but the Ex would not give in with Jason Baynham 100,121,125 scoring an excellent 2-1 win over Mark Seggerson 3x100,120 . R. Knight 2x100 pulled a third leg back for the Ex breaking the throw of I. Thomas 137,140 and in a last game hold of darts Wayne O.Neill 100,120,121,2x125 beat Matthew Charleston 100,125 by a 2-1 score. Colliers Arms 4 v Merthyr Vale Ex Club “A” 5 (Daggers “A”) This was another of this weeks games that went right to the wire before giving a winner as the game , as dear old Sid Waddell would say, went up and down like a metronome, ( we all miss you Sid). D. Thomas 100 & G. Price took the opening pairs for the hosts against the throw with a good win over Steve Probert & G. Robertson but the Daggers were quick to level as T. Probert & J. Evans hit back beating Leighton James 100 & G. Davies again against the darts. A first hold of throw of the contest saw Steve Llewellyn 140 & Harry Morgan edge past Martin Treen 100,140 & Jimmy Rees for a 2-1 lead going into the singles. T. Probert 2x100 2x140 came from a leg down to beat John Jones in the first singles making the overall score 3-1 to the visitors but D. Thomas 3x100,180 arrested the slide with a fine 2-1 win over Steve Probert 5x100 to pull back a second point for the home side. Steve Llewellyn 4x100 made it 4-2 to the visitors with a 2-1 win over G. Price 2x100,140 in another hard fought encounter before Damion Lewis 100 beat G. Robertson 100 to keep the Colliers in the game. Mighty Martin Treen beat Harry Morgan 2-0 to level the match at four apiece and in the final game as Keith Lewis cup of Horlicks cooled down he was beaten 2-1 by J. Evans as the Daggers took the game at the death for a hard fought win. Division Three. Aberfan Social Club “B” 2 v Guest Keen Bowls Club “B” 7. The Guest B made the long trip to the Aberfan B and immediately set about taking control of the game with T. Pollard 2x100 & C. Jones taking the first pairs over Vic Jones 100 & Alan Phillips and a break of throw from D. Spencer 100 & A. Pollard over Jack Colston & Des Collins saw the score liner move onto 2-0. Wayne Robinson 140 & R. Wilkes 100,119 then made it a clean sweep of the pairs with a hold of throw over Gwyn Jones & Bryan Williams. Wayne Robinson 100 made it 4-0 with victory over Des Collins in the first singles match by a 2-0 margin a nd a 2-1 score then saw Wayne Benbow 3x100 beat Jack Colston 92 out to advance the score to 5-0. A. Pollard 100 battled past Alan Phillips making it six zip before Clive Rees 100,180 made it a magnificent seven with a 2-0 win over Bryan Williams 100. Gwyn Jones finally got the home side onto the score board with a fine win over D. Spencer 100 and then Vic Jones 100,140 gained Aberfan a much deserved second point beating T. Pollard 100 2-1 against the throw. Penydarren Social Club “C” (Sea Side) 6 v VNU 3. Johnny Murphy 108 & Dai Morgan took the first pairs against the darts beating A. Moule & Errold Jones 100 and then in a second break of throw Barrie Gilby & R .Pike lost out to S. Randall 121 & C. Corcaran as the scores drew level. The break of throw theme continued in the final pairs with Ceri Stent 140 & G. Galleozzie beating Steve Dallow 100 & Clive Powell 140 to nudge the Pen into a 2-1 lead ahead of the singles. Errold Jones 2x100,120 squared the match with a 2-1 win over Johnny Murphy 3x100 in the first singles against the darts but then a 2-0 win from Dai Morgan 2x100 over Dean Quantick saw the hosts go 3-2 ahead. D. Clayton 100 won the next singles match 2-1 over C. Richards 2x100 pulling a third point back for the VNU but back came the Pen through Ceri Stent 100,121,C. Davies 139, and Drew Bradley 2x100,140 who beat Mark Hadley, Graham Elias and Eddie Cunnington respectively for a comfortable win. Angel Inn “A” 4 v Penydarren Social Club “A” 5. G. Jones 140 & Nigel Owen took the opening singles with a hold of throw over Mark Davies & Chris Thompson but back came the Angel through Brent Morgan & Glen Callan 97,121 with victory over Phil Bond & P. McCarthy to level at 1-1. Michael Bond 125 & R.Beynon 121 then nudged the Pen into a 2-1 lead with a fine win over John Pugh & Steve Phillips with the singles battles up and coming. Mark Davies 139 beat Phil Bond 2x140 with throw in the first singles to level the match at two apiece and then the Angel took the lead for the first time with Chris John scoring a fine 2-0 win over Michael Bond. Steve George kept up the good work for the home side scoring 100,140 in a fine 2-0 win over Jonathon Evans making it 4-1 to the home just one more win away from victory. The Pen though had other ideas and R. Beynon 100,140 battled hard to beat John Pugh 100, by a 2-1 score coming back from 1-0 down. Nigel Owen 2X100,125 also came back from 1-0 down to beat Graham Hancock 102 to set up a deciding last game which saw Brent Morgan 2x100,140 in action for the home side but it was G. Jones 2x100,121,122 who held his nervr and throw to take the contest 2-1 and the match 5-4 for a much relieved Pen side. Farmers Arms “A” 5 v Lord Raglan “B” 4. This was another fascinating game that started with Dai Jones 111 & Wayne Morgan breaking the throw of W. Davies & Dai Phillips for an early lead to the home side. Brian Meek & Martyn Lewis levelled the match with a fine win over Steve Hamer & Trevor Jones and in a third break of throw John Thomas 117,121 & Shaun Price beat Kiron Meek & Terry Barnett put the Farmers back ahead at 2-1 heading into the singles. The outstanding John Thomas 123, 140, 2x180 beat Martyn Lewis 3x100 by a 2-1 margin in the first singles to make it 3-1 to the home side and a break of throw from Dai Jones 125 , 180 by another 2-1 score over Kiron Meek 121,140 saw 4-1 appear on the scoreboard and 5-1 quickly followed with Shaun Price 100,121,127 beating W. Davies 2-0. Very much to their credit the Lord refused to surrender and veteran Brian Meek 3x100 beat Wayne Morgan 2x100 to pull a second point back for the visitors. Living legend Terry Barnett 100 made it three points for the Lord in beating Gary Price 2x100 2-0 and then Dai Phillips 156 turned back the sundial to beat Steve Hamer 100 again by a 2-0 score and earn the visitors a valuable fourth point. Division Four. Cardigan Arms 3 v Farmers Arms “B” 6 The Farmers started like a runaway train, well tractor, on their visit to the “Cardi” which saw Stewart Charleston & Dean Moulds take the first pairs over Bernard Clayton & Conor Clayton 100 for an early lead and this was doubled with Neil Roberts & B. Evans 119 breaking the throw of Kevin Creswell 100,125 & Nathan Price for a 2-0 lead. Neil Williams & T. Davies then held throw in the last pairs beating Nigel Bees & Mark Edwards for a 3-0 advantage going into the singles. Dean Moulds 3x100 took the first singles against the darts beating Nathan Price 100, 130 by a 2-1 score and a 2-0 score saw Stewart Charleston 2x140 beat Robert Roberts 131 for a 5-0 lead. Conor Clayton 140 stalled the tractor with a hard fought 2-1 over Neil Williams to gain the Cardi their first point but then it was more despair for the hosts as Neil Roberts 100 beat Kevin Cresswell 2-0 for a 6-1. Nigel Bees stung T. Davies 100,121 to pull a second point back for the hosts and Mark Edwards 2x100 collected a third with a 2-0 win over B. Evans 119. Dynevor Arms 5 v Martyrs Club “B” 4. Another of the games to go right to the wire this was another fantastic game from start to finish. A. Wickens & J. McNamara took the opening pairs for the Martyrs with throw over Kerry Lloyd & M. Edwards but then a hold of throw from S. Barnett & B. Edmunds over L. Osbourne & L. Fear saw the scores level. J. Murtaugh & D. Morris then produced the first break of throw of the match to beat C. Norman & C. Leath to gain the Dyn a slight advantage going into the singles. J. McNamara levelled the match with a break of throw over M. Edwards 180 but the Dyn then regained the upper hand with J. Murtaugh getting the better of L. Fear by a 2-1 margin. L. Osbourne beat Kerry Lloyd to square it up again but a 180 from B. Edmunds helped him beat C. Norman by a 2-1 score putting the home side one win away from victory. A. Williams 121,123 levelled with a good win over D. Morris and in a very tense finale S, Barnett broke the throw of C. Leath and the hearts of the Martyrs to take the game and with it victory for the home side. Ye-Olde-Express 3 v Winchester Bar 6. T. Williams & Andrew Morgan 100,98 out took the first pairs for the Winch beating Doug Wills & Matthew Fealy but the lead did not last long as S. Ball & S. Ali 126 beat Paul James & Johnny Andrews and then a break of throw from Ian Protheroe & M. Beckingham saw them edge the Express in front with victory over D. Davies & M. Evans. The first singles had Ian Protheroe in action for the home side but he came up against the master Andrew Morgan 100,140, 180 who levelled the match with a 2-0 win in a break of throw. Doug Wills 100 took the next game for the hosts with a good win over I. Peters 125 for a 3-2 lead but then the Winch turned up the heat with Paul James 4x100 beating M. Beckingham to level before M. Evans beating S. Ball 100 by a 2-0 score. T. Williams 140 beat Matthew Fealy to make it 5-3 to the Winch with D. Davies 100,120 beating S. Ali 2x125 2-0 in the last match up for a comprehensive 6-3 win. Division Five. Lord Raglan “A” 7 v Llwyn-Yr -Eos Inn 2. Missed doubles here cost the Llwyn dear as a few legs want a begging leaving the home side to sweep up and take a comprehensive victory. D. Day 100 & S. Craze got the away side off to a good start beating L. Thomas & K. Hunt but the Lord boys were soon level with Bryn Lewis 100,125,110 out holding throw to beat F. Murphy & Alan Foley. The last pairs leg also went to the home side with Kevin Snowden & Dai Davenport cashing in to beat J. Davies & D. Thomas against the darts. Alan Driscoll 171 took the first singles with a 2-1 win over F. Murphy to edge the hosts into a 3-1 lead but this was cut in the next game with S. Craze 101,121 beating K. Hunt 100 to earn the visitors a second point. This though unfortunately for the Llwyn proved to be their last point as the missing of doubles proved costly with L. Thomas 100, Bryn Lewis 100, Mike McLaughlin and Kevin Snowden 100 beating D, Thomas, Alan Foley 121,128, J. Davies and D. Day respectively for a commanding 7-2 win John Street Club 5 v Colliers Cwtch 4. This local derby saw the Cwtch go down the street down the alley and then up the street to face John Street Club in a highly entertaining affair which like so many this week went right to the wire. G. Williams 112 out & D. Clayton took the first leg against the darts giving the hosts first blood but the Cwtch were quick to reply with R. Davies & L. Rees edging past C. Jones & H. Samuel to level at 1-1. Another break of throw in the final pairs saw B. Lewis & M. Evans 116 edge past V. Harding & P. Beck 121 to give the home side a 2-1 advantage going into the singles encounters. G. Williams 100 beat A. Beck 2x100 with throw to nudge John Street further ahead but back came the away side through P. Beck 3x100 to score a 2-1 win over P. Clayton and reduce the arrears and then J. Watts 100 came back from a leg down to beat Martin Jones 100,140 and level the match at 3-3. Heather Baker beat H. Samuel 2-1 to put the Cwtch 4-3 ahead and a point from victory but back came the home side through B. Lewis witgh a 2-1 win over G. Jones to level at 4-4 . In a tense deciding last game C. Jones came from a leg down to beat V. Harding 2-1 and take the match for a delighted John Street Club team.,
