Would like to take a moment to wish all of you Moms out there a HAPPY Mothers Day!! With this wish to you also comes a reminder that many Vets with PTSD dont seem to do well with holidays or celebrations for mixed reasons. From what Ive learned and experienced.... for some its because they dont feel right about participating in celebrations of any kind, because the buddies they lost arent here to celebrate any more. For others its because celebrations involve crowds or large groups of people, and PTSD and large gatherings dont usually mix well. It also could be because some feel that after all the death and tragedy they have seen, celebrating most anything seems trivial and stupid.... and then, there is always the lack of any good feelings some with PTSD are experiencing still, and having to be around a bunch of happy people who are celebrating, and being reminded by their very presence, in one more way, that they are now very different... etc. etc. Im not saying any of this to give an excuse to Veterans for not finding SOME way to honor the Mother or wife in your life on this day. There are any number of small things you can do to say Happy Mothers Day to a loved one... especially if, as Vets, you remember its about honoring those special women in your life, and ALL of you know how important honor is. The point of my message is the same as most of the posts on this page usually are... MUTUAL understanding for one another, and seeing it from both sides. Ladies, if you are expecting an overwhelmingly grand gesture, he may genuinely not be capable, and may be feeling VERY irritated with himself about that, so, be gentle and extra receptive to what your Vet CAN give. Hoping you all have a blessed day. ~~Michele Smith
