Would you be interested in pursuing a bachelors degree at Shasta College? A new bachelor’s degree could come to the North State with the implementation of a state law allowing community colleges to grant four-year degrees. In what could represent a monumental shift for public higher education in California, community colleges will begin offering bachelor’s degrees in vocational fields. State Bill 850, which Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law last September, will allow 15 community colleges to pilot the program and offer degrees not offered by California’s state universities. Shasta College has applied to offer a degree in health information management, a program administrators say could turn out up to 30 students a year at a price tag of slightly more than $10,000 for four years of school — thousands less than one year at any of California State University’s or the University of California’s schools. The school currently offers a certificate program in the field. “We’re really hoping we get chosen,” said Meridith Randall, vice president of instruction for the college. “I think it will be a great thing for the community.” Students in the program learn to do medical coding and billing, as well as maintain medical records.
