According to the media reports, two chocolate products tested positive for traces of pork DNA. It is reported that the traces were found during a periodic check for “non-halal” ingredients in food products conducted by the Ministry of Health. The claim for the pork’s DNA in chocolate products was made by a report published by “Nikkei”. Whereas, the Cadbury Malaysia was not immediately available to comment on the Nikkei report. The official website of the Malaysian ministry declared that: “The two chocolate products after they tested positive for traces of pork DNA.” The post further added that: “The two products, Cadbury Dairy Milj Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond, were readily available in stores through the country.” The Cadbury Malaysia, like most food makers in the country where Muslims make up more than 60 percent of the population, has all of its products certified halal to conform with Islam’s dietary restrictions, one of which is a prohibition on pork. It was undertaking a full review of its supply chain to ensure halal standards and the Malaysian government said it will conduct inspection of all Cadbury Malaysia’s products. Malaysia is seen as the global leader for halal certification, with exports of $9.8 billion last year. For food industry, halal scandals are considered to be the bad PR and even worse for the bottom line. The halal food industry is estimated to be worth hundreds of billions of dollars worldwide.
