ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIAN JOB SUMMARY: The HSoMC animal care technician has the primary responsibility for maintaining the health and welfare of all animals in the care of the HSoMC shelter and assisting the general public. This includes care of all animals housed within the HSoMC animal shelter and maintaining clean and orderly animal housing and employee work areas. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: •Intakes animals, including: breed evaluation, age evaluation, overview on basic health (fleas, injuries, illnesses, etc), photograph(s), cage preparation, and immediate vaccinations. •Processes animals received by the HSoMC animal shelter, which includes inputting animals into petpoint system, all animals outcome to be recorded through petpoint when leaving. Keep log of lost and found pets. •Assists individuals who come to the shelter to inquire about adopting and/or redeem lost pets. Issues Midland County dog licenses. Collects and records fees for adoptions, reclaims, surrenders, licenses, etc. •Maintains proper identification and records on all HSoMC animals. •Oversees the feeding, watering, and exercising of shelter animals. •Oversees and ensures that the animal kennels are rinsed, scrubbed, and disinfected on a daily basis/as needed. Ensures that the hallways, floors, walls and isolation/quarantine areas are clean. Cleans water and food dishes and related kennel equipment and facilities. Oversees bathing and grooming of animals when necessary. •Supervises volunteer activities. Ensures trustees and community service workers stay on task. •Administers vaccinations, implants microchips and completes preliminary physical examinations in a prescribed manner. Medicates any animal designated for treatment daily/as needed. Administers lysine to cats daily. •Checks animal health, safety, cleanliness and overall well-being on a daily and periodic basis, and reports any significant problems immediately to his/her supervisor. •Assists in conducting behavior assessments and health screenings on incoming animals. •Performs or assists with the euthanasia of sick animals. Disposes of the euthanized animal. •Organizes activities with HSoMC foster coordinator(s) and aids with the transfer of animals into foster homes and other agencies/facilities. •Answers public telephone calls in a professional manner, and routinely checks voicemail messages, email, and facebook messages (if applicable) and initiates follow up when needed. •Communicates with veterinarians or other agencies to provide or obtain animal health information. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: •Is punctual and maintains regular, predictable attendance. •Treats all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and transmits these values to others. •Assists with tours, lectures, public education programs, fundraising activities and special events as needed. •Transports trustees to and from the jail in personal vehicle. •Is committed to a high standard of safety and willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules. Is willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel. QUALIFICATIONS: •Basic animal care knowledge. Preferred: knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques. •Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and memos. •Ability to write reports and correspondence •Basic Computer knowledge in: oWord Processing oData imputing in Spreadsheet programs oEmail management oData entry – Spreadsheet or Database program oInternet Searching and use of information in an appropriate manner. oVarious reports •Valid driver’s license EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent required. Additional education in Animal Science and/or previous and related experience working with animals preferred. LANGUAGE/INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: •Possesses excellent customer service skills. •Able to multi-task and work quickly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment. •Able to remain calm and professional in potentially high stress and chaotic situations. •Enjoys working with people – staff and general public – in an animal care environment. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: •Able to lift at least 50 pounds (up to 100) •Able to bend, stoop, and work at floor level for animal restraint, care and cage cleaning as necessary •Able to stand, sit, and/or type for extended periods of time •Tolerant of exposure to cleaning/disinfecting agents and potentially caustic chemicals •Tolerant of working in all weather conditions for extended periods of time •Tolerant of high noise levels. •Able to use animal control equipment and is familiar with first aid supplies.
