Would you please take a moment to think about a word that people use as a slang term (some on a daily basis) and dont give it a second thought? I hear it often and I assure you, I think about it deeply! The word is, Retard. People who are caring loving people, maybe parents themselves, use it. Kids seem to use it frequently, maybe to tease their friends, when they are referring to someone who did something stupid or silly. It is used so often, many dont seem to realize what they are saying. When you use that term to describe someone, no matter why you are saying it, it cuts through to my soul. Have you ever thought for one second, how it makes me feel to hear you use that word? You may be saying something in jest but it stabs like a knife in my heart to hear you say that word. If you were in front of my son, would you use that term? I hope not. However, people do use it in my presence. My son has Down Syndrome. For many years, it was referred to as being retarded. I remember people saying that word in hushed terms, as if it was something to be ashamed or maybe even frightened of. People with mental challenges ( and physical as well) were put into institutions because the parents were told they would never be able to function in society and would never be able to even LOVE their parents. Do you know my son???? He is so loving and YES intelligent! His attitude and disposition brightens lives every day. All this being said, Can I ask a favor of all of you? Please dont use that word (if you do) and if you hear someone using it, please remind them how hurtful and inappropriate it can be to someone like me and mostly to my son! My wonderful, special gift.. He is not a Retard. He is Boomer...
