Wouldnt it be nice when studying a surname to figure out the exact spot where the first person used it? And wouldnt it be nice to be able to describe this discovery process in just three or four pages worth of text and images? Some if not many of you will recognize the business names Irish Origenes, English Origenes and Scottish Origenes. These are run by Tyrone Bowes, who used his DNA results (Irish Ely Carroll subgroup) to theorize a way to apply matching DNA surnames to locate a surnames origin within a five-mile radius (!). He then began marketing case studies based on his theory and presenting his work as scientific. Many who are very experienced with DNA, surname studies and cartography find his theories, techniques, analyses and facts are often highly oversimplified. Unfortunately - from my perspective - he frequently uses his misleading Irish Bowe(s) case study in presentations and articles to illustrate his work. These are then often posted online, thus making a more or less permanent record of his Bowe(s) claims in the context of his commercial activities. Ive finally written a rather lengthy critique of Tyrones Irish Bowe(s) case study to offer another perspective on his material. Ive included a Table of Contents to make it easy to look at just those sections that might interest someone who doesnt want to read it all. The DNA section is a bit technical, but the others shouldnt be much of a challenge to take in. Im open to feedback as always :-) Of course Im a hobbyist here and always learning. I take my time to try to do thorough research and seek out feedback from experts in all the relevant areas. Thats why I belong to the Guild of One-Name Studies which was founded in 1979, and why I asked David R Bachinsky to be a co-admin of the Bowes DNA project (he has an academic and career background in genetics). Unfortunately I dont think Tyrones very happy with me for openly disagreeing with his Bowe(s) material; on the other hand, if hes going to present it from Seattle to London and lots of places in between, his prospective customers should have an opportunity to weigh other perspectives on his work before purchasing their own case study. https://sites.google/site/bowessurnames/origins/ireland/critique-of-dr-bowes-theory
