Wow - listening to these uke players from back in the heyday (the 1920s) its fascinating the many different styles of individual players. This recording below I found on youtube of Jonny Marvin, its fascinating to hear him play Melody for a change. INCLUDING SPLIT STROKE https://youtube/watch?v=0pPy4IQGtg0 Judging from the many uke books I have (and the May Singhi Breen Lesson 78rpm from the 20s) they teach a stroke called the syncopated stroke (similar type of rhythm to what we now call the Split Stroke. They indicate to use the stroke as a fill in like how we include a triple as a fill in in normal strumming. As we know George Formby must have used these tutor books, and of course, elaborated on the syncopated stroke as there is more than just down up down down up etc (and including finger lifts)/ Its fascinating the evolution of the instrument. Its interesting to note that practically all the famous players from that era do triple strokes instead of strumming that is so much of the norm now, not saying there is anything wrong with that of course :) Going back in History, I think Wendell Hall was one of the first to start off the craze with It Aint Gonna Rain No Mo then close after Cliff Edwards and then the others, as before this Ukulele on record was issued Hawaiian music, and these artists made the instrument into the pop music
