Wow. After a wonderful night at the Coffee Gallery Backstage performing with Sligo Rags, I find myself still up at 6:00am posting on Facebook. Why? Well, I was in such a good mood at first. Great craic at the CGB, followed by reading some uplifting material and sharing it on FB. Then a couple of my friends practically get kicked out of the cafe we are at, simply because the boss son despises them. Unfair. And unfair that the waiter, who is a friend to all three of us, gets stuck in the middle of everything and loses big time ... both with our two friends AND with the boss son. Then I watch a video of some caregiver physically abusing and attacking a little girl who couldt have been older than two years. Unholy and wholly disturbing. And then I come across several posts related to the recent unrest and racial tensions caused by the incidents in Ferguson and NYC. Posts that are diametrically opposite in perspective, but unified in vitriol. So I spent the remainder of the night looking at facts, statistics, and articles written by various persons of differing political viewpoints. Oh, and of course, I had to put my oar in, as well. So why am I posting this on Facebook? The answer is that social media is such a big part of my life. I can express my views, share them with friends, read and try to understand the views of my friends who have vastly differing perspectives from mine. I can stay connected with friends and associates, and let them know where they can come see me perform. Ah, I have so many reasons for being here on Facebook all night long. I wonder if there is a 12 step program for social network addicts. And if youre reading this, allow me to reintroduce myself: Hi, my name is Michael Kelly, and Im. Just. Like. You.
