Wow! Check this out -- the first annual Plant Based Prevention of Disease conference is next month in AVL!!! : p-pod.org Dear Members Of The Asheville Vegan Community– We hope you’ve been enjoying fully our precious autumn. In 25 days there will be an historic event in Asheville.... historic for the vegan movement; historic in terms of advocacy for using nutritional measures to reduce disease risks; and historic via setting an example that a professional conference can operate 100% free from commercial money or influence yet still offer low-cost educational opportunities to practitioners and the general public all together. We can make it even more historic by proving that our little Asheville can stage a successful national public health conference! The 1st annual national Plant-based Prevention Of Disease (P-POD) Conference will be hosted by the Department of Health and Wellness, University of North Carolina Asheville, Nov. 14-16, 2014. It is a strictly nonprofit effort that brings together an unprecedented collaboration of national organizations.... to explore the human research about how plant-based approaches to eating may help prevent, or even reverse, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and other conditions. A truly vegan open-to-everyone health-promotion conference.... which will also offer continuing education credits to physicians, nurses, dietitians, physician assistants, midwives and others! P-POD is totally Asheville-driven.... Bob LeRoy founded and coordinates the conference, Amy Lanou chairs the UNCA department that hosts it, Katie Cox is the Administrative Assistant there, Bill Najger will cater the 2 vegan gluten-free luncheon feasts that are included in the registration, and our nonprofit-chartered community-based French Broad Food Co-op is now an enthusiastic collaborator. But, we’ve so far lacked the publicity locally that we need. People from 14 states and 1 Canadian province have registered for P-POD, but we’re not getting Asheville registrants, and overall totals need to be boosted in order for the event to succeed. Please help us spread the word virally! Below is the key information that anyone might need! (1) P-POD WEBSITE (OR QUICK FLYER) (2) P-POD COSTS AND REGISTRATION (3) P-POD SPEAKERS (4) P-POD VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED (5) P-POD CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS (1) P-POD WEBSITE (OR QUICK FLYER) Complete, updated information (with online registration available) is at: p-pod.org which is also reachable at PreventionOfDisease.org [Inquiries may go through the website or to [email protected].] If you would just like to download a flyer really quickly, use: preventionofdisease.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/P-PODPos2.pdf (2) P-POD COSTS AND REGISTRATION Conference hours: Fri. 6:40-9:35pm, Sat. 9:50am-6:15pm, Sun. 9:30am-4:50pm Rates (including 2 vegan gluten-free luncheon feasts): **for students: $112 (or Fri. $21, Sat.-Sun. $91) **for general public not seeking continuing education credits: $192 (or Fri. $36, Sat.-Sun. $156) **for members of certain co-sponsoring dietitians’ groups: $176 (or Fri. $33, Sat.-Sun. $143) **for physicians: $261 (or Fri. $52, Sat.-Sun. $209) **for all other health professionals: $208 (or Fri. $39, Sat.-Sun. $169) (3) P-POD SPEAKERS P-POD is an evidence-based look at how eating choices may reduce the risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases. A fairly presentable-on-the-inside vehicle would be desired! : ) This would be very much appreciated. Times on Thurs., Fri., Sun. or Mon. would be available. **We could provide 2 full conference-fee scholarships to individuals in return for helping with an assortment of P-POD tasks. (5) P-POD CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS This is the legalese that only health professionals really need to see. P-POD is fully accredited for continuing education credits as follows: **Awarded to physicians, and recognizable (subject to their own credentialing requirements) for Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists: 13.25 maximum AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits for participation in the full weekend conference, as defined very specifically in the CME DETAILED STATEMENT on the p-pod.org website (issued by the Mountain Area Health Education Center).
