Wow. I actually cried as I hugged Mrs. Shindo goodbye. Once again tonight, all their neighbors and friends talked together about how they loved the sushi and the community feel of Robata. We gave her flowers and a card. She gave us take out menus and a happy Buddha sculpture to remember them by. :( Her waitress from years ago came running in to help her wait on people as she was all alone waiting on loads of people who had come for one last dinner at their favorite place. She wasnt getting paid, she was there as a friend to say her goodbyes and to help out, out of the goodness of her heart. This is what this place and the Shindos inspired. We all talked and got teary. I have never, ever felt this way about a restaurant closing. Its not about the amazing food, though that will be missed. Its about saying goodbye to people who have been in your life for so many years, through every kind of trial and triumph. Its about this lowly center city spot, not the most chic but the best for so many reasons. I will miss them very, very much.
