Wow, I am dropping this medication my psych doc put me on (Doxepin 100mg). I gained 50 pounds in eight months and I couldnt figure out why it was happening at first; I thought I was just getting old and fat. Then I read up on the medications side effects and one of the most prominent ones was weight gain - in fact, most people reported gaining 10 lbs. in less than a month on average. I am so pissed off that I didnt read up more about this medication sooner; I just trusted my psychs assurances that it was good for depression, anxiety, and sleep issues. Besides the weight gain, it often made me feel dry and drowsy in the morning, as if I took a Benadryl or some other antihistamine. Thankfully, most of the reports I read said the weight would come off just as fast as I had gained it as soon as it is discontinued. Its just as bad as Seroquel was to me a decade ago in terms of weight gain. Screw this crap; it wasnt even particularly useful for putting me to sleep at night. I really tried to modify my diet over the last few months and nothing was helping; good thing I decided to look this med up before I blew up in size anymore. Odd thing is that this med is given to people at much smaller doses (4-8mg) for sleep purposes alone; allegedly at the 50-150mg range you would get anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, though I couldnt tell that was happening during my time on it. I think I actually got more depressed due to my dismay about the uncontrollable weight gain. Anyone else have experience with this particular TCA (tricyclic antidepressant)? ps from now on Im going to start looking up what the docs are giving me before I willingly take it; I had stopped doing that for a while because the doctors felt that I was trying to manipulate them by doing so. But clearly I need to be more vigilant when it comes to these shrinks putting meds in my body. :(
