Wow, I continue to be extremely impressed by the responsiveness of our Mayor Philip Levine. In the seven years I have lived here, the response thus far from City Hall in responding to the way the police deal with accidents on our only access in and out of the City has been - deal with it, be patient, as the police shut down the causeway for hours and sometimes half a day while they investigate all too often occurring accident scenes. These accidents can range from mild fender benders to fatalities, but all cause major backups into the beach, downtown, and on the highway. Each time they force an unannounced rerouting of then irritated reckless drivers into the residentials areas with no warning or heads up as to how long the causeways will be closed. But today the Mayors office released this notice: Traffic Management on Causeways During Accidents: In the wake of the numerous recent traffic fatalities on the Causeways, the Police Department and new Police Chief have recommended that the City invest in 3-D imaging cameras. The state-of-the-art equipment will catalog evidence at the scene of a traffic accident, reducing the duration of road closures by up to 50%. Also under consideration is the installation of HD video cameras at strategic locations along the Causeways, which will help reduce the amount of time it takes to reconstruct an accident scene. Surely every bit can help speed up the process and inconvenience these accidents cause everyone. This is great news. The City of Miami Beach Government should also conduct a more real time and prompt updating of their Twitter account notifying people of closures as long with deployments of signs well in advance of the accident sights. It does no one any good to be told of a closure and re routeing at 5th and Alton by police officers blocking the road.
