Wow. I wrote a comment that was OFF THE HOOK! Heres the backstory: My friend William Henderson, asked me about black marriage and the destruction of the black family unit in recent decades. I gave several reasons for the decline of black families. Then Robert T. Koch chimed in with his assessment of welfare and social programs. Heres my response to my friends comments. (It is brilliant, if I say so myself): Well, Bob Koch, and Bill Henderson, this is my reply... I use the words from a speech by ex-slave, famed abolitionist, consultant to President Abraham Lincoln, Mr Frederick Douglass, Everybody has asked the question, and they learned to ask it early of the abolitionists, What shall we do with the Negro? I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are wormeaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! I am not for tying or fastening them on the tree in any way, except by natures plan, and if they will not stay there, let them fall. And if the Negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone! If you see him on his way to school, let him alone, dont disturb him! If you see him going to the dinner table at a hotel, let him go! If you see him going to the ballot- box, let him alone, dont disturb him! [Applause.] If you see him going into a work-shop, just let him alone,--your interference is doing him a positive injury. The problem as I see it is two fold: Americas white majority (conservative and liberal) has held black people back. Both are guilty of impeding black progress. Neither Democrats or Republicans are sinless. In the US racial attitudes crosses all boundaries. There has been brief moments of America living up to her creed but those moments are short lived. She abandons her principles to secure wealth and power. AS we can clearly see how US expansionism nearly wiped out Native American culture and how treaty after treaty was broken by white men to steal Indian lands, we see promises of freedom for blacks not fully realized. Historically, white Americans say that want peace, justice and equality but when it comes to money and jobs they are reluctant to share with their dark skinned brothers. They have found ways to exclude minorities from jobs, they redlined black neighborhoods, they denied them housing. When a black got a good job working alongside whites, they were often paid less and passed over for promotions. So I echo Mr Douglass words, Leave the Negro alone. If you are not going to help him with a sustained support, then let him go and let him do his own thing. And when he proves to be an admirable competitor in the marketplace, dont get in his way, dont conspire against him. And as for black people, I would say, Be independent. Self sufficient. Build your own schools, teach your history, establish your businesses, provide loans to yourself, pool your resources, exert your political power and lead the nation to higher heights.
