Wow! Im impressed by what the Department of Environmental Protection of Taipei City does to keep Taipeis generated waste to as low as possible. Taipeis waste management programme helped the waste generated to drop while the population grew to 2.6 million. Residents dutifully sort and recycle or dispose their garbage at certain fixed locations at fixed timings during specific times of the weeks. Incentives are in place to encourage greater recycling and lower waste amongst residents. Old furniture and bicycles are reconditioned and auctioned to the public. Virtually every waste item that can be reused or recycled is done so. Even waste food is recycled as swill for pigs. And yes, you can hardly find a rubbish bin anywhere in the city. I wonder if Singapore can learn from Taipei in our zealousness to reduce littering, cut waste and encourage recycling? It would be a dream to live in a clean, green and more sustainable city, rather than one where we have to relentlessly deploy armies of sanitation workers to perpetually pick up after us.
