Wow. Justin and I just saw American Sniper. I really dont understand any of the controversy surrounding this film. It seemed to me to be a well-balanced portrayal of Chris Kyle, a basically decent human being who was dehumanized by four tours of duty in the most dehumanizing of all situations. Bradley Cooper is superb, as is British actress Sienna Miller as his long-suffering wife trying to understand him and reach him. And when hes not busy yakking with chairs like an insane person, Clint Eastwood is still one of our finest directors. In the end, American Sniper is no hagiography. It depicts an American hero -- and in my book, if your ass is being shot at by bad guys during war, youre a hero; I dont care what your role is -- whose human flaws were exacerbated by the horrors of war. It in no way glorifies war but shows the bravery of those who fight and the battles they must wage long after theyve returned home. An incredible film.
