Wow Kanal so proud of your presence in WINGS!!! I am amazed at the diverse things you are capable of doing… Such an inspiration this is for all of us!! Contrary to the popular misconception that IT professionals are NOT artistic, here, you are one artist doing both with the same gusto!!! It’s women like you who can motivate us to spread our unseen wings and soar higher, Kanal! So, dear readers, introducing you to yet another dynamic woman….. Kanal Shah…. Kanal originally is an architect and later became an IT professional (as a SAP developer for almost 10 years now). She hails from India and lives in Switzerland since 2001 with her husband and son. Kanal recently gained the Masters degree from the ETH Zurich, in Management, Technology and Economics and now she has been lured to use her business brain with her very personal creative desires to form a textile business with creations in silk, cotton and “batik”. What is “Batik” ? Batik is the art and craft of decorating cloth , using wax and dye. A form of art that has been practised for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there. The word batik originates from the Javanese tik and means to dot. Contemporary batik, while owing much to the past, is markedly different from the more traditional and formal styles, though. Kanal’s proudly admits, her interest in the art and craft of Batik was inherited from her mother. Says Kanal, “I am currently pursuing my art by teaching and giving courses on Batik. I often create Batik Scarves or Stoles - in cotton or silk and pillow covers, to keep my spirit alive in Batik. Block-Prints: I created my first collection with a craftsmen in India, the aesthetics, designs and colours were chosen by me and then I was mere an observer while the collection was in production. Gradually, I started carving my own blocks, first on the speedball carving blocks and later with the gained confidence and momentum, on linoleum blocks. Nowadays, I get my own designs carved into wood blocks, so that they transform into long lasting designs. I still continue to work with those craftsmen in India and create my collection every year - in support of this wooden hand-block printing technique. The ideas and creativity evolved with the time and at one point it felt right to present the handmade collection to people around the world, who appreciates hand-made creativity. The inspiration for designs has been and still is the rich culture and traditional motifs of my home State Gujarat, India.” To know more about Kanal, feel free to visit her website: kanalshah/about_me/index_en.html
