Wow. This is by far the most moving, inspirational and powerful TED talk I have ever heard. My mind has been expanded. Eleanor Longden overcame her diagnosis of schizophrenia to earn a master’s in psychology and demonstrate that the voices in her head were “a sane reaction to insane circumstances. Listen to this amazingly brilliant, vulnerable, courageous and beautiful woman share how she first began to hear voices in her head when she was attending a university. She shares how when she told her friend, her friend was horrified. She slowly shared with the counseling center at the university and was immediately assumed to be insane. She talks of the pain and all that went that, including the stigma and assumptions made about her. She talks about her journey through the voices and how she learned to listen to them and negotiate and understand that they were all aspects of her self. Listen to how she and others formed an organization, Hearing Voices Network, to empower others and to teach that the voices are part of the person as a result of trauma and are in fact a survival tactic. She says instead of asking someone what is wrong with you we should be asking what happened to you? Please watch this. It is amazing. It is inspiring and will show you about how amazing the human spirit is and some of the sane things our minds can and will do to survive insane situations. Absolutely should be seen by every college student and parent and anyone who has experienced trauma and those who work with, live with and love those who have had trauma. Please watch. You will be glad you did. Eleanor Longden is an amazing person. So thankful for her vulnerability to share her story and her great work with all of us. Love hearing her thank those who empowered her to help herself. Check out hearingvoicesusa.org and hearing-voices.org
