Wow. What can I say. I went to Cuba with a completely different state of mind. Get drunk, have fun, go back home. When I got there though, Im a person who naturally gravitates towards my people. While everyone else wasted their time tanning on the resort, dangling their ugly feet in the pool. I went to the barrios and local beaches to talk with my people. It was difficult in the beginning cause my spanish was small and horrible. But after two days I learned so much of the language I was able to Laugh, make jokes with them, and learn their way of life and culture. Biggest honor I had was when they gave me the name Santiago, which is an área with alot of afrocubans. One of my friends, Leo, looked at me and said Your so different from the other tourists. They come, sit on the resort, and turn their nose up at all the locals. But you come and the whole day you stay with us, everyday. Why? i said Because your my people, i come from nothing, just like you. I cant turn my nose up towards my brothers and sisters. They looked shocked for a while then they said Your one of us now, your cubano, Miguel de Santiago and they all hugged me. Bro, the tears I had to hold back then and now were crazy. Im never ever ever ever ever gonna forget my first trip to cuba. And believe me It wont be my last. Big shout to my family for The incredible graduation gift and this amazing experience.
