Wow!, never had a day like that on the bike before. Took the newly refurbished bike for another test ride today, but this time I thought I’d include some hills. Reached Garstang averaging 15.4mph before thinking I feel good so we’ll have a run through the Trough of Bowland. The bike worked wonderfully but sadly, the same can’t be said for the rider. Having ‘conquered’ the climbs of Jubilee Tower (a real sod from Quernmore) and then the Trough itself (admittedly the easy way), I then decided to take the ‘roller coaster route’ to Chipping along the minor road that leads to Wildboar Park. Once I’d passed through Chipping, I bonked like never before…..oh do stop sniggering at the back, it’s a cycling term and it basically means I ran out of fuel which, with 25 miles to get home was not what was wanted. Anyway, a stop on the A6 to take on some chocolate and Coca-Cola gave me the impetus to get home, albeit fairly slowly with various bouts of cramping in the legs from time to time (my average speed for the whole 71 mile ride was 11.9mph so you can see how much slower I was). Feel recovered now – apart from a left knee that is aching for fun – and possibly I’d just done too much without having enough ‘miles in the legs’ from previous rides or, I may just have had a bad day (physically), although the day, and the ride itself, was great.
