Wow . . .so so sad. Wrong or right, often times I think we as rescuers we fail to consider these issues and if we do, then we may take a leap of faith and hope it works out. I realize we can only do so much to really educate an applicant about a dogs lifespan and question whether they are really ready for the commitment. Personally, young newlywed families or engaged families scare me the most because in the first 10 yrs (greater part of a dogs lifespan) most go through at least 3-4 major life changing events {major events being marriage, new baby(s), new house, change of jobs, loss of parent(s), divorce} and in all honestly I am more likely to reject one of these families for one of my fosters because the long term risk is too high and I never want one of my fosters to ever be in a situation where they are no longer part of the family.
