Wow, talk about an eclipsed composer! There are lots of reasons why he should have become a Big Deal in post-war German music, but it really never seems to have happened. I cant even recall having ever seen an LP or CD with his works. This piece is quite complex; Ill have to hear it a few times before Ill be able to catch whats going on under the hood. It sounds 12-tone, but it lacks the lushness of Berg, clockwork precision of Webern, angst of Schoenberg, and so on down the line. Actually, especially near the end, I hear more nods to Wagner (in one of his less bombastic moods) than any other composer Im familiar with.
