Wow, the Victorian Electoral Commission doesnt know its own power. Since the last election quite a few seats have changed boundaries [the VEC set those independently of the government of the day]. So they sent everyone a letter telling people their new electorate, which for most was the same as their old electorate. But they also told people about their pre-polling options and where those early voting centres were. AND DID THE PEOPLE EVER COME OUT TO VOTE! .My arms are sore, it was probably close to triple the previous pace over the previous seven days, certainly more than double. More than half an hour from joining the queue to coming out. Yes handing out how-to- vote cards to so many people makes your arms sore after six hours. The VEC stuff, in my polling centre were exceptionally efficient shepphaerding everyone to a neat queue, which made it easy to ensure you didnt miss anyone. We were so busy we had to wait to the arrival of the third Liberal worker before she was able to go through the huge pile of returned cards which the VEC staff have been putting into a box and delivering to us, and sort them out. We then organised the recycling to all the party groups. My own guess is that 22 per cent of the electorate would vote before the polls officially open. These are not going to be counted till Monday. So the Saturday night results will be skewed. Those who vote early have been predominantly older retired people, not the Greens strongest group. So lets not get too optimistic on Saturday night. One other observation: the Labor Partys booth workers have all been my generation. The Liberals are all young. Not a good look for the ALP.
