Wow; what Id give to go back in time for an evening in that club. Incredibly high quality video! Theres a reason every great jazz artist from the 50s and beyond cited Fats Waller as a primary influence. You recognize essentially every modern musical genre within this clip, including even break dancing. They had this shit figured out 75 years ago! Dude was MAD talented. This is why white folks went to these clubs back then, cause thats where the real scene was. African-Americans couldnt vote back then, they couldnt stay in a hotel, use a public bathroom or drink from a water fountain, but we was OK with them entertaining us on the downlow. Wed go there to party into the wee morning hours, then pretend like nobody knew what happened after waking up on opposite sides of the tracks, the next morning under the glare and truth of the daylight. We couldnt admit it in the daylight. That was the reality at the time of this video, and it wasnt all that long ago. This was during the height of WWII. Things were in many ways, light years different, and in many other basic ways, exactly the same. Namely in that, we need each other to get along.
