Wow, what a fantastic weekend. I have not cried so many tears in such a long time (tears of joy)! I wanted to repost my wedding speech at Rakib Mazumder and Fatima Ghanis wedding for those who wanted it. Please note that this is the version from my notes. I did improvise a lot of it on stage. Although it is not a carbon copy, the sentiment is clear: Id like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Mazumder and Mr. And Mrs. Ghani for hosting us on this very special occasion. The Sterling is a beautiful venue with great food and great people. It reminds me of Eid at my house, only my amu isnt cooking or nagging me to clean the dishes. Today, two ordinary people have come together to build an extraordinary bond. I have to say, I havent been so happy in a long time. In fact, this is one of the happiest moments of my life. Ill never forget it - just like Ill never forget the first time Rakib told me about a special girl in his life. You see, before he met Fatima, Rakib was crazy kid. Some would say he was ridiculous. His parents raised him with a competitive spirit. He was ambitious. And he was smart - really smart. I mean, he was a rockstar at everything. My mom used to teach us arabic together in my home. I would study every day. Hed study only two days. Yet he finished reading the entire Quran before me. And when it came to tests, he was number one. I mean, he studied just once from my SAT textbook. He got one of the highest scores in the country! And I? Well, lets just say my score didnt get me into Yale. He was a driven and super charged individual. Prepped for school, strong friends, and a loving family. Yet he didnt have a sense of direction. He didnt have purpose. Then he met Fatima. Ill never forget the day Rakib told me about her. Aminul, Nabil, and I were visiting him in Yale when we sat in his dorm room. He had a wide grin on his face. He was timid - shy to talk about her. He would tell us about how she would make him laugh and what theyre plans were for the weekend. It was surreal. It was a different Rakib. By the time I had seen him again at our annual Eid reunion, I could tell something had changed. He had fallen in love. And when you are in love, everything gets better. You go to class with a chipper attitude, you lose weight, you even get better at basketball. When we went to the basketball court to celebrate our Eids, he no longer hogged the ball like he used to. He would actually pass! He was at the top of his game. He even managed to get the most anti-sports person ever to leave my video camera and play some ball. Because for him, it was no longer about winning in life. He had already won. Rakib and Fatema have connected their souls, engaged their hearts, and created something special. Theyre joy is everlasting and they are the reason for our joy today. Inshallah, theyll have beautiful children and grow old together. May Allah shower His blessings upon your marriage and bring forth a new life through your newly-formed bond. Mabrook! Thank you.
