Wrathall becomes a double victor Before today’s Super Touring car race at Silverstone got underway Neil Smith was disqualified after taking the victory yesterday after it was seen that he was at fault for an incident early in the race. This means that Frank Wrathall was promoted to the victory. This meant that Wrathall would start from pole position for today’s race and he made a good start in his Vauxhall Cavalier to lead, a lead he would never loose. Stewart Whyte (Honda Accord) made a strong start from seventh on the grid to take second at the Loop on the second lap. Whyte would stay in third ahead of Craig Davies who was racing the ex-Chris Hodgetts Ford Sierra RS500. An ex-BTCC driver who was taking part in the Silverstone Classic was Tiff Needell. He had his second encounter in the Balvenie Trophy for Historic Formula Ford cars driving his Lotus 69, which he actually raced in period. The Fifth Gear presenter started the race in eighth after finishing in that position yesterday. A good start from Needell meant he was able to run as high as fifth position but did drop back to tenth due to his exhaust starting to fall off. Although, he worked his way back up into seventh by the end of the race. Patrick Watts wasn’t only racing his Peugeot this weekend; he was also out in the RAC Woodcote Trophy for pre ’56 Sportscars where he raced an Allard J2. Watts went well in the early stages of the one hour race where he was battling within the top six. After running a strong sixth in the second section of the unfortunately he had to retire after eighteen laps. Written by Joshua Barrett
