Writers Residencies: Deadlines Approaching! A space dedicated entirely to writing, specially designed to provide creative inspiration and minimize distractions. A change of scenery. An opportunity to shake off those old habits that keep you from producing your best work. A writers residency can provide all of this-- and more-- at no cost to you. With a little research, youll discover that these opportunities are everywhere. From retreats for poets in log cabins to collaborative residencies on university campuses or in artists colonies, theres a program for every sort of writer out there. Participating is as simple as submitting an application and a few writing samples. Theres no risk-- only the potential to gain so much from a transformative creative experience. Rocky Mountain National Park Artist-In-Residence Program Deadline: November 15, 2013. Apply here! Where: Moraine Park, Colorado When: Two weeks from June-September Description: The Artist-In-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the parks inspiring landscape. The artists finished work will characterize Rocky Mountain National Park for present and future generations, and offer the park visitor and the general public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes and ears of the contributing artists, thereby fulfilling one of the program’s main purposes. Another aim of the program is to ensure the preservation of the William Allen White Cabin, a historic structure within Rocky Mountain National Park. Built in 1887, this home was set aside in 1984 to house Artist-In-Residence participants. Selected artists participating in Rockys Artist-In- Residence Program from 2012 through 2015 are asked to donate to the Park an original piece of work from, and representative of their residency in Rocky Mountain National Park which will serve to promote and celebrate the Parks upcoming centennial in 2015. Andrews Forest Writers Residency Deadline: December 1, 2013. Apply here! Where: McKenzie, Oregon When: 1 week during March, April or May Description: Creative writers whose work in any genre reflects a keen awareness of the natural world and an appreciation for both scientific and literary ways of knowing are invited to apply for one-week residencies at the H.J.Andrews Experimental Forest. The resident writers live at the Andrews Forest, interact with the scientists, explore the forest, and write. Writers are encouraged to visit designated study sites for reflecting on and writing about the forest and their relation to it. These writings, which will form a collection spanning hundreds of years, will be gathered in permanent archives at Oregon State University, and are accessible via the web-based Forest Log. Writers are provided a comfortable, three room apartment at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest. Collaborative Retreat at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek Deadline: December 1, 2013. Apply here! Where: Corvallis, Oregon When: March 9 to March 22, 2014 or March 30 to April 12, 2014 Description: The Collaborative Retreat at the Cabin at Shotpouch Creek is a two-week retreat for two participants who wish to pursue a collaborative project, or two participants who each have individual projects and who anticipate a synergistic benefit from each others presence. At least one of the applicants must be a writer who takes inspiration from the natural world. The second applicant may also be a writer, or he or she may work in any other field (e.g. science, philosophy, music, art, crafts, etc.). This retreat recognizes that writers are part of a dynamic system of writers, readers and wider communities. Unusual energy and inspiration can emerge when people from different backgrounds work together in a place of natural quiet and beauty. The Baltic Writing Residency in Latvia Deadline: December 15, 2013. Apply here! Where: Riga, Latvia When: One month during summer 2014 Description:The residency takes place during the summer months, and is located in less than twenty miles from the Baltic Sea, in the Latvian capital of Riga. Given annually through a competition to one poet, playwright, or writer of fiction, the residency was established to encourage the further study and writing of poetry, fiction, and theatre, as well as to expose artists to Latvia, its people and its culture. Though the residency offers privacy and seclusion, residents are encouraged, if not urged, to take full advantage the vibrant city in which they will find themselves. The winning resident is housed in the Hotel Bergs, a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Riga, or in one of its townhouses and is awarded $1,000 toward travel and living expenses. The standards for competition are simply talent - both emerging and established writers are encouraged to apply, keeping in mind that neither the writer, nor their project need have any relation to Latvia. University of Arizona Poetry Center Summer Residency Deadline: December 16, 2013. Apply here! Where: Tucson, Arizona When: Two to four weeks between June 1-August 31 Description: Since 1994, the Poetry Center’s Residency Program has offered writers an opportunity to develop their work. Beginning in Spring 2014, the Poetry Center will award one residency each summer for a poet to spend two to four weeks in Tucson, Arizona developing his/her work. Writers at any stage of their careers may apply; emerging writers are welcome. The residency includes a $150 stipend per week and a two-to-four-week stay in a studio apartment located within steps of the Center’s renowned library of contemporary poetry. Unlike other residency programs, there are no other writers or artists staying on-site simultaneously. However, the Poetry Center library is full of fun and interesting patrons who like to talk about books. The Poetry Center staff, volunteers, and docents do provide some hosting and welcome activities for the summer residents; however, applicants should understand that they are largely on their own. We leave it to each individual to decide how much engagement with the community s/he would like, understanding that residents are here for uninterrupted writing time. Constance Saltonstall Arts Colony Residency Deadline: January 2, 2014. Apply here! Where: 7 miles outside Ithaca, New York When: Two and four-week residencies from late April to mid-September Description: New York State poets, fiction and creative nonfiction writers and visual artists are invited to apply for two or four-week residencies at the Constance Saltonstall Arts Colony, located in the beautiful Fingers Lakes region of New York. Each residency session includes just five artists and writers at a time. Each group arrives and leaves together. The residencies provide inspiration, a quiet studio, a beautiful setting, and a stimulating community of artists working in diverse disciplines. Residents receive a $250 or $500 stipend depending on length of program, a spacious private apartment with ample desk space, and five vegetarian dinners cooked Monday-Friday by the colony chef.
