Writing Verses of the Qur’aan on the Walls of the Masjid : Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen By ABDURRAHMAN ORG in MTWS, QURAN & TAFSEER, RAHA BATTS , SALAH , SHAYKH UTHAYMEEN Question: Noble Shaykh, what is the ruling on writing verses and Hadeeths on the walls of the Masaajid? Answer: This is confusion of the people. As for writing verses upon the walls of the Masaajid or other than them, this is from the innovations. It is not found (to be) from the companions that they would inscribe verses upon the walls. Moreover, inscribing the walls with verses contains a type of belittlement of the Speech of Allaah. Due to this, we find some of them writing the verses in the image of castles or minarets or Masaajid, etc. They fashion the writing such that it resembles a castle. There is no doubt that this is playing around with the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. Moreover, if it were possible to be written with Arabic writing that is legible, (still) this is not from the guidance of the Salaf. (Furthermore), what is the benefit in writing it upon the wall? Some of the people say that it is a reminder for the people. We says: reminder should be by way of statement, not by way of writing the verses (on walls). At times, there may be written upon walls: ﻭَﻟَﺎ ﻳَﻐْﺘَﺐ ﺑَّﻌْﻀُﻜُﻢ ﺑَﻌْﻀًﺎ And do not backbite one another. (Al-Hujurat 49:12) Yet, you find the people sitting under the verse backbiting the people. This is mockery of the verses of Allaah. Hence, writing verses within the Masaajid upon the walls and upon the walls of the houses is all innovation which was not done during the era of the Salaf. As for writing the Ahadeeth, then within the Masjid in the direction of the Qiblah, no doubt, is a cause of confusion. Perhaps some of the worshipers will look at it during the prayer. The scholars, may Allaah have mercy upon them, dislike that a person should write anything in the direction of the Qiblah of the masjid. As for within the home, then there is no harm in writing a Hadeeth, if there is a benefit; such as writing the closing (supplication) of the gathering: ﺳُﺒْﺤَﺎﻧَﻚَ ﺍﻟﻠَّﻬُﻢَّ ﺎﻨﺑﺭ ﻭَﺑِﺤَﻤْﺪِﻙَ ، ﺃَﺷْﻬَﺪُ ﺃَﻥْ ﻻ ﺇِﻟﻪَ ﺇِﻟَّﺎ ﺃَﻧْﺖَ ﺃَﺳْﺘَﻐْﻔِﺮُﻙَ ﻭَﺃَﺗْﻮﺏُ ﺇِﻟَﻴْﻚَ Glory be to You O Allaah, and praise be to You; I testify that none has the write to be worshipped except You; I seek Your Forgiveness and I Turn to You in repentance
