Writing-and-military Intersection Update: One cool benefit of being in the Army is access to something called Master Resilience Training. Basically, theyre coaches for your brain and they have graduate degrees and doctorates. I can make appointments whenever I want, but we dont have to necessarily work on making me better at *Army stuff*. So, I made an appointment to talk to a trainer about writing. Specifically, how to get in the zone every day, regardless of time of day, for at least long enough to write 1K/day. My end goal is to write two first draft novels a year in three months each, and use the other six months to revise, promote, work on other projects, etc. Many of my colleagues (several who are probably reading this post!) have set routines that help them be prolific. But being in the military, I cant really get up earlier or stay up later to get my words done at the same time every day. I cant count on EVER being able to write at the same time every day, if I want to juggle school and work, and make sure my wife and son know I care about them. :P DAMNED if this doctor didnt come up with a strategy I hadnt thought of...and its worked! Ive done my words Wed, Thurs and am about to today as well...and as for Friday, I consciously chose to take the night off. And its been at different times each day. Week after next, Im following up and theyre going to do biofeedback research while I sit in the office and write.
