Writing on music are musings strung on tones. The impossible - TopicsExpress

Writing on music are musings strung on tones. The impossible contrast between the texture and rhythm of complex electronica cannot be conveyed in any semantic scheme. It is lovely though to try. FACT magazines overview of Autechres production of austere and syncopated synths is an excellent example of descriptive musicology done right: the decidedly bizarre ‘Fold4 Wrap5’, which sounds like a videogame soundtrack eating itself. Drane: Its centerpiece is an abrasive scattershot rhythm that darts from left to right, steadily fleshed out with swishy pads and a plaintive melodic loop. Discordant synth figure and creaks of radio noise build around the rhythmic core until they reach a critical mass, throbbing in an uneasy equilibrium. ‘Tapr’ is weirder and more exotic, a glitchy mutant that does away with a groove in favour of a incoherent mass. Drums that sound like vinyl pops fizz around a low synth line, joined by a disjointed host of sounds – synth gurgles, detuned piano, strings and organs. The overall effect is not one of progression but of micro-movement, a swirl of tiny particles all colliding according to their own curious logic.
