Writing recent history comes with fish hooks. Im writing a novel - TopicsExpress

Writing recent history comes with fish hooks. Im writing a novel set around the Bastion Point Protest/Occupation 1977-1978. Went to the Hocken and Otago Uni libraries to do more research. I watched Awatea Films 1980 Bastion Point Day 507 documentary, by myself in the viewing room of the library. I began to cry about 6 mins in and wept till the end. Found snippets of all sorts of things: diary entries, private letters, newspaper accounts, an unpublished novel, transcripts of court proceedings and transcripts of arguments recorded between Māori on different sides of the issue. Most people were involved in the wider fight for the return of their land and other injustices/hikoi(march)/take(claims). Its like picking out bits of hessian from scattered pea straw to use for weaving a basket to hold this important story.
