Written Wed. Today started with breakfast at 5:30 am. Our ship has docked in Haines Alaska. But a tour I wanted to do was across the bay in Skagway, a 40 minute boat ride. So, not only was I deprived of beauty sleep, its not easy looking this good, but I was also deprived of sufficient time to coffee up. Then I had to sit on the outside deck of the ferry, shivering like a sinner on Judgment Day. Not a good start. Then this guy comes on the PA system whos job it was, apparently, to entertain us. He professed to have common ancestry with the local Indian tribe, name unpronounceable or spellable. So, he decides to sing old Indian tribal songs to us. Without music. And without a tolerable singing voice. He sounded worse than the Harbor Seals. Given my mood, I was undecided between offering him $20 to shut up or simply throwing him overboard. I am proud of myself that I did neither. Instead I used that Kollege Edekation I got at Auburn and went to the back of the boat where the engines drowned out all sound and warmed me to boot. Anyone know the safe limits of carbon monoxide one can safely breathe? Feeling a bit woozy all day. Skagway is a town frozen in time from the Klondike gold rush of the late 1800s. Which is why I wanted to see it. Loved it! I took a narrow gauge, old fashioned train along the path the first Alaskan explorers used to cross the mountains into the interior where the gold finds were. The train cars were heated by old cast iron stoves. One had to be athletic enough to stand near the stove, with the train car constantly swaying back and forth, without falling back and burning ones hiney. The vistas thru White Pass, I wonder if any of my kin had anything to do with it, were breathtaking beautiful. But it boggled my mind that anyone, even with horses and mules could climb thru that mountainous pass. Those were some tuff men. Chapeau, as the French say. Portions of the original trail that was used before the railroad was built, are still visible. I saw a bunch of Bald Eagles flying, coasting really, in the thermals between the mountains. Really kewl. After we returned, I had a couple of hours to wander around Skagway. Most of the old buildings are now filled with gift shops selling cheap tourist stuff. But the town itself was amazing. I bellied up to the bar in one old salon and ordered some fish and chips, fried Halibut that was so good,... insert your own analogy here. Okay, Sandy reminded me to comment on certain ladies on the cruise. Now these ladies are probably in their 50s with some likely in their 60s and 70s. For reasons indiscernible by me, they are dressing without regard to weather or concern of being judged by others. And, I am skeptical they dress like this in their home town where people know them. For example, there is one lady I guess to be in her late 50s who wears spandex body suits every day. Those one piece numbers. Unitards I think theyre called. Now she has a nice figure, especially for her age. And one call tell she was beautiful in her youth and still attractive today. But.., Without exaggeration, she had to have had booty implants, size DDD or however they measure them. Or else she has two volley balls stuffed in the back of her leotard. When she walks, her body moves like anyone elses, except her booty. Her booty is fixed in position like it has an internal gyroscope holding it in position. Now, obviously she is proud of her booty or else why put it on display in spandex. On Tuesday, when we were in Glacier Bay, air temps in the 30s with wind chill pushing down another 10-20 degrees, a different lady, aged 50 maybe, came out on deck with the rest of us to see the glaciers. While the rest of us had foregone fashion sense and put on every article of clothing in our suitcases, she choose to wear a miniskirt so short it would make a Vegas showgirl blush. No hosiery or leggings, just a pair of over the knee, high heeled boots and bare legs. And bare bottom when she leaned forward over the rail to see the glaciers. (I had to insert a new memory chip in my camera. I used up my first 8 meg.) Okay I really didnt take pics of her leaning over the rail. I kept dropping my camera. Then there are a group of four ladies who appear to be sweet and graceful in their 60s, with age appropriate silver-gray hair, except for the pink and purple streaks theyve died in their gray hair. Now, I am the last person on earth to be judging fashion sense, but come on! Im going to venture an opinion. Not many people think pink, purple and gray hair is a thing. Then again, Maybe thats just me. So, my theory is these women are dressing like they wished they had on Halloween in their hometowns. Free of being morally judged by ones peers. And what happens on the ship, stays on the ship. Okay, time for me to dress for dinner. Lets see. Where did I put my skinny leg low rise jeans. Gotta look good for the ladies tonight.
