Written by Anna Henry Special to the RGJ Jul 07 rgj The Nevada Office of Veterans Services hosts the second 2013 Women Veterans Wellness Event from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Siena Hotel Spa Casino. Female veterans across the state are encouraged to attend to become educated about healthy life choices and the benefits of being a veteran. In a news release, Women Veterans coordinator Yvonne Betron reported that female veterans face unique problems, including that they frequently do not identify themselves as being veterans. “Women veterans are sometimes overlooked in the public as being part of the veteran community,” she said. “But as every other veteran, they have needs and concerns, and we want to bring them together for the opportunity to discuss and learn about health issues with other women veterans in their community.” A variety of classes will be offered, including cooking, tai chi, managing stress, dealing with age and filing claims. The event will include a walk along the river, followed by a lunch at nonprofit Z-Pie. Vice Mayor Sharon Zadra of Reno will attend the lunch to speak with the women. With this event, the Nevada Office of Veteran Service hopes to bring together female veterans in the area, giving them recognition and possible solutions to their issues. “We ask for and encourage the public to spread the word of this event, which will raise awareness among women veterans and help the community to understand and connect with veterans,” deputy executive director Kat Miller said in a news release.
