Written by Randy Richmond - Vietnam Veteran To all who’ve faced and fought the orange dragon, and especially to those of our 71st Transportation battalion Vietnam who have lost that battle…the list grows ever longer… Comrades of Camelot It was a different looking Camelot Our battalion army camp Dry and oh so horribly hot Until it turned to wet and hot and damp That heat and dust that filled the air Seemed like it would boil our blood The two seasons seemed to us unfair When the dust would turn to mud But we did what we were asked to do The things that war entails Heading out to work with our crew In blazing sun or monsoon gales The roads we traveled on each day Were built with laterite And something else added along the way The grass and weeds to fight Guess we should have wondered Why these and trees could not be found It seemed most green was plundered When there was jungle all around And now all these years later With so many friends in early graves And our understanding greater How this ‘orange’ thing behaves We’d like on this new Memorial Day As we listen to ‘Taps’ tune And our respects to all we pay To salute our brothers gone too soon!
