Written by the wise 84 yr old Robert VanHoose... Read John 15: 9, Proverbs 27 October 17 Fair Weather Friends “God will surely do this for you, for He always does just what He says, and He is the one who invited you into this wonderful friendship with His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9 NLT It’s amazing how friends seem to vanish when you can’t be of anymore use to them. The prodigal son had plenty of friends to play with on his way to the pigpen. Politicians out of office and purchasing agents out of jobs often find out about fair weather friends. Jesus has had and continues to have more “fair weather” friends than anyone in the history of mankind. When He provided free lunch, five thousand became His new “best friends”, and would probably later be among those shouting, “Crucify Him”. The disciples were nowhere to be found when trouble came. It seems that many today base their friendship with Jesus on what He can do for them instead of what He has done for them. As long as the “free lunches” and the cup of material and physical blessings keep overflowing, “God is in His heaven and all’s right with the world.” When troubles and problems arise, as they surely will and do, many respond with anger and falling away from God instead of anchoring deeper and deeper into their love relationship with Him and experiencing the strength and comfort of His promises. Every rose garden has thorns. Until God takes us home to heavenly bliss, He promises His all-sufficient grace to handle the scratches. When we learn the secret of abiding in God through getting to know Him through His Son, we will find out what real friendship is all about. Father, let me be more than a “fair weather friend”. By the power of Your Spirit, let me be a friend in all seasons for all the right reasons. In Jesus’ name, amen homilygrits/
