Wrote this just to take your mind off all the serious problems the world faces. This is as far removed from your daily life as it gets. :) (Imagineland) ‘My Favorite Pet’ Every family has its traditions and ours was no exception. Shortly after our ancestors migrated to this area they began to adopt the local customs – and Christmas was my favorite! I’ll never forget the year I entered adolescence. (Even though I knew the ancient myths were just folklore) I’d made a point of letting my parents know that the only thing I really wanted for Christmas that year was a pet of my own. I’d never had a pet, and truth be told, they were right in one respect; I wouldn’t have been wise enough before to take good care of one up until then. Despite all the hints though, I really didn’t expect to get one that year either. So you can imagine my surprise that Christmas morning when I walked into the room and there before the tree was a large box with a bright red bow; with my name on it – and I could distinctly hear whimpering coming from within. I wasted no time in removing the wrapper and caught my breath when I saw her, curled up in the corner, whining and looking so forlorn. She was beautiful with a long blond mane and bright blue eyes. Her hair glistened like silk and I picked her up and cuddled her close; soothingly attempting to dispel her fear. I was told she was a thoroughbred Scandinavian; came with pedigree papers and everything. She’d even had all her vaccinations; including the latest MCI (methane conversion inoculation.) Oh, she was a beautiful specimen! My friends were so jealous! They all wanted one of their own. She came dressed for the occasion in all her Christmas finery; with her soft red velvet cap with seal-soft white fur trim, set at a rakish angle on her head, she was the cutest thing I’d ever seen. Her entire outfit was made of red velvet with white furry trim. She even sported an elegant sapphire collar that matched the blue sparkle in her eyes to perfection. It was love at first sight. I was cautioned that she was extremely rare and very delicate and that I must take extremely good care of her. I named her ‘Lady’ because the name seemed to suit her to perfection. Even though she had the full run of the house we built a special house for her in the corner of my room that she could call her own. We modeled it after some of the ancient ruins, hoping she would get over her shyness and learn to trust us. She spent hours in her little abode and in no time seemed right at home. I kept a cupboard filled with snacks that she enjoyed and as time went by it became apparent that she loved me as much as I loved her. That was over sixty Earth years ago and still we are the best of friends. She never seems to get bored with seeing me and seems quite anxious if I stay away for too long; she follows me everywhere whenever she possibly can. Though there are few of her species left on Earth, those that have survived have mostly migrated into the farthest most reaches of the planet and are seldom seen anymore. It has become increasingly difficult to breed them in captivity (though it has been attempted using frozen sperm they had left behind) for some unknown reason their young seldom survive. My folks told me it was estimated that when I received Lady there were fewer than 300 of her species left in the wild. Once they had roamed the entire globe and had been instrumental in altering the atmosphere to better suit the needs of our own species; never realizing that in serving their own misguided desires they were actually being used to further an ‘other-worldly’ agenda. Our early ancestors had carefully planted ideas and inventions that they found to be irresistible to their way of life. As they multiplied they formed collectives that conveniently mined the Earth to fuel their artificial lifestyle and in a short time they had filled the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and methane; the two ingredients we most needed to thrive. Unfortunately they were a war-like species and the clans clashed frequently with one another. In little over a century however (those that survived their internal conflicts) had altered the ecosystem enough that we could begin our migration in earnest with little detriment to our well-being. They, of course, didn’t fare so well in the long run. Where we required water laced with certain chemicals that were harmful to their existence and an atmospheric mix their weak organs were incapable of breathing for long, they had been persuaded that adding them was a necessary requirement to assure their future. They were simple creatures after all, easily convinced by our envoys and their weak physiology eventually caused them to succumb to innumerable illnesses that cleared them from the planet. It was a carefully orchestrated, planned obsolescence; once they had served their purpose they were no longer required and their demise gave our species room to thrive in their absence. We learned about the colonization efforts in school and I always felt that it was a shame our species had been so cruel to drive them to near extinction to serve our own needs. From the day I first laid eyes on her, Lady became my constant, most trustworthy, companion. I found myself avidly procuring new outfits and toys that I knew she would enjoy. At the end of the day she would look at me with those soulful eyes and curl up next to me in sheer contentment. I found myself sharing all my most personal thoughts with her and she would listen attentively and even appeared to try to communicate in return it seemed. Of course everyone knows; Homo sapiens aren’t intelligent enough to possess language the way we do, but somehow it seemed like she could understand me regardless. Every year at this time I think how blessed I was to receive Lady all those years ago and I thank the Cosmos for her presence in my life. She is getting old now (the lifespan of a human being is a fraction of our own) and I know our time together is limited, but I have found that love given - is love returned. Being able to own a pet has been one of the highlights of my own existence. May you be fortunate enough to someday own a pet of your very own! I highly recommend it.
