Wóhela heníčha he? Are you a cook? Háŋ, wóhela hemáčha. Yes, I am a cook. Hiyá, wóhela hemáčha šni. No, I am not a cook. USAGE NOTES: The English phrase I am... is expressed in Lakota in several different ways, depending on the context. Lets have a look at one of those ways. Hemáčha means I am a... and is used for saying what groups you belong to. For example: I am an optician; I am a Porcupine Singers fan; I am one of the new students. Essentially, the word hemáčha associates you with other people of the same type. Please avoid using it for describing your characteristics (I am tall; I am friendly), or emotions (I am excited) or location (I am in the bathroom). We can go look at how to express these ideas in a later lesson. YOUR TURN: Use the dictionary (goo.gl/16J8yX) to find words for jobs and other groups that people might be part of. When you search for a word, have a look at the brown text that follows it. If it is n, it means the word is a noun, and you can use it with hemáčha.
