X-Files Redux: Bad Blood. (Season 5, Episode 12); written by Vince Gilligan, directed by Cliff Boles, aired Feb. 22, 1998). In my brief survey of the 200 episodes of The X-Files streaming on Netflix, Bad Blood stands in sharp relief with some of the best writing and performances of the series. And its funny. And it slouches toward True Blood. No Smoking Man or aliens in sight, just full on Mulder and Scully with vampires -- well, maybe -- and a rural * Teshish * sheriff, played by none other than Luke WIlson. Among the delightful aspects of this piece are the multiple view points -- our heroes are poised to testify to their superior about the fatal mishandling of a case and they try to understand to their satisfaction what exactly happened. In Rashomon style we get to see Scully act in the way that Mulder perceives her, and vica versa, and the way the audience views them. This episode also has one of the most singularly strange and hilarious bits in the whole of the series. This involves a Winnebago stuck in reverse as it circles the center of a RV campground as Mulder tries to, well, wrestle the vehicle to a stop. I didnt get it back then, but Mark Snows use of Ride of the Valkúrie blends into a cut of Mulder blearily perched on a vibrating bed -- the music goes under the thuckita-thuckita-thuckita sound reminiscent of a helicopter -- and the close up of his weary eyes suggests…well, Martin Sheens I was getting weaker and the Cong were getting stronger, hotel scene in Apocalypse: Now! A wink wink nudge nudge visual/audio pun it took me all these years to understand. And Luke Wilson, the local sheriff who discomfits the unflappable Scully and makes her smile -- she she actually flirts -- because shes (apparently) getting glamored as they would say on Bon Temps, Louisiana. Watching her impress with Sheriff Hartwell by the confident rattling off complicated Latinate diseases that might explain the appearance of vamprism reminded me of the compelling testimony in My Cousin Vinny of Maria Tomei as Lisa about that 1963 Pontiac Tempest. Scully also has one of the best laugh lines, when complaining about Mulder summoning her from the bed for yet another autopsy, But I just put money in the Magic Fingers. We serve near into True Blood when Sheriff Hartwell apologies that the other dimwit vampire, makes us all look bad. Hes just not who we are anymore. Scully then realizes he coffees drugged and she tries to keep her head up. Hartwell, seeing the effects, goes on, I mean, we pay taxes, were good neighbors. Old Ronnie, he just ... he cant quite seem to grasp the concept of ... low profile. But though he may be a moron, he is one of our own. And, now, enter the disturbing Sheriff Lucius Hartwell. https://youtube/watch?v=K_1CSisIx4E
