XL PIPELINE: POSSIBLY “GAME OVER” FOR DEMOCRACY, NOT JUST CLIMATE That’s no joke or hyperbole, but my freshest, deepest thinking on the URGENCY of making Obama reject the Keystone XL pipeline. And in my newest OpEdNews article, I follow simply logic from the climate meaning of the pipeline to that unexpected—and dire—conclusion. My reading of things is that in a nation where most people are already too passive to sustain democracy or truly representative government, construction of the climate-destroying pipeline is SO evil and demoralizing—in many ways a death sentence for humanity—that if it approved and built despite civil disobedience, even activists will lose the hope in humanity’s future needed to sustain reform. With human civilization condemned to possibly not outlasting this century, why bother? If I surprisingly invoke the Harry Potter arch-villain Voldemort in my piece, it’s to indicate how all-encompassing a triumph of evildoers (evil in both purpose and methods, like endless lies and harsh repression of dissent) I think the pipeline construction will be. And needless to say, that applies to all aspects of our insanely criminal “all of the above” energy policy—including recent schemes to lift the ban on U.S. oil exports.
