YCLSA condemns the comments attributed to Judge Zak Yacoob The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) strongly condemns the comments attributed to Judge Zak Yacoob in relation to the 2004 rape case where President Jacob Zuma was acquitted. We find it bizarre that Judge Yacoob will cast doubt on the jurist that presided over the case. If he had a problem with the ruling, why did he not bring it up ten years ago and express his concern then? We view this sudden expression by Judge Yacoob as grandstanding and a desperate attempt to garner attention. It is sad that it has to happen at the expense of another human being who is in the process of putting this painful episode behind him and his family. This has the potential to bring back pain to the Zuma family who had to endure the hardship they went through in 2004. We reject the apology by Judge Yacoob and we certainly do not believe that he was misquoted. We view him as part of a broader grouping that is obsessed with tarnishing the image of the president at whatever cost. We reject his efforts of trying to portray himself as someone who has monopoly over objectivity. He is going all out to paint Judge Van Der Merwe as a subjective judge because he acquitted President Zuma. This has become a worrying trend in the media, academia and now judiciary. Anyone who criticises the ANC in general and President Jacob Zuma in particular is seen as “objective” This is indeed the tyranny of the minority when you consider the overwhelming majority of the country has faith in the ANC and our president. The YCLSA supports and will always defend the independence of the judiciary. It is all our responsibility to make sure that the judiciary is protected from people like Judge Yacoob. We therefore support our mother body the SACP’s call for the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) to investigate Judge Yacoob. Issued by the YCLSA Head Office
